FRENCH (FRE)Division of Modern Languages and LiteraturesIn order to meet general education requirements for graduation, students must demonstrate foreign language proficiency through the intermediate level in one language for the B.A. degree, or through the elementary level in one language for the B.S. degree. A student may demonstrate proficiency either by examination or by passing courses through the appropriate level. The French program provides courses through the intermediate level which satisfy the foreign language requirement in the general education curriculum. The program also provides courses leading to a major or a minor in French. The aims of the French program are to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in French; to develop an appreciation for the history, geography, and culture of France; and to develop an awareness of the importance of French-speaking countries in the world. In addition French majors will acquire a knowledge of French phonetics and of major French literary movements, works, and authors. Students who have completed at least two semesters of college French may be eligible to participate in the North Carolina Semester in Paris, sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with Greensboro College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Guilford College, High Point University, East Carolina University, and Elon University. Major RequirementsA major in French consists of a minimum of 30 hours above FRE 102 (Elementary French II). A student must achieve a 2.0 grade-point average or above in all courses attempted in the major. Course selection should include the following:
French majors are encouraged to complete six semester hours of credit for study of a second foreign language and to work or study in a French-speaking country. Minor RequirementsStudents who wish to minor in French must take at least 18 semester hours above FRE 102 (Elementary French II). A student must achieve a 2.0 grade-point average or above in all French courses attempted in the minor. FRE 254, French Literature in Translation, does not count toward the major or the minor in French but may be counted toward the literature requirement in general education requirements for graduation. Courses in FrenchFRE 101 Elementary French I (3)This basic course in French language emphasizes the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Attention is given to fundamentals of French pronunciation and to elements of contemporary French culture. Offered every Fall Semester.FRE 102 Elementary French II (3)This course continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. Continued attention is given to elements of French culture. Prerequisite: FRE 101 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered every semester.FRE 201 Intermediate French I (3)This course reviews the basic grammatical structures of French and continues the development of the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. More complex grammatical structures are introduced, and emphasis is placed on the culture of Francophone regions outside of France. Prerequisite: FRE 102 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered every semester.FRE 202 Intermediate French II (3)This course reviews grammatical structures of French and continues the development of the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Particular emphasis is placed on more fluent use of both written and spoken language through the study of contemporary French culture and an introduction to French literature. Prerequisite: FRE 201 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered every Spring Semester.FRE 254 French Literature in Translation (3)This course studies selected works in translation. Course content will be determined each semester that the course is offered, for example, The Development of the Novel in France, The Classical Theater, Romantic Poetry, The Literature of the Occupation, A Survey of Women's Writing in France, or Francophone Women Writers. This course may be repeated for credit up to three times. Satisfies Literature General Education requirement, but not the foreign language requirement. Offered periodically based upon student need.FRE 301 French Civilization (3)This course examines the French people and their customs, history, institutions, arts and aspirations. Prerequisite: FRE 201 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered Fall Semesters, 2003 and 2005.FRE 310 Advanced Grammar and Composition (3)This course provides an intensive review of grammar and structure, with emphasis on translation and free composition. Prerequisite: FRE 202 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered Spring Semesters, 2003 and 2005.FRE 335 French Culture and Conversation (3)This course studies elements of contemporary culture, with emphasis on developing conversational proficiency in everyday situations and contexts. Prerequisite: FRE 201 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered Spring Semesters, 2004 and 2006.FRE 341 Phonetics (3)This course is a study of the phonological elements of the French language, with emphasis on the accurate production of sounds and intonation patterns, as well as a comparison with those of American English. Prerequisite: FRE 202 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered Fall Semesters 2004 and 2006.FRE 401 Survey of French Literature I (3)This course serves as an introduction to major French authors and their works and to literary movements in France from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. Offered Fall Semesters, 2004 and 2006.FRE 402 Survey of French Literature II (3)This course introduces major French authors and their works and literary movements in France during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Offered Spring Semesters, 2003 and 2005.FRE 405 Seventeenth Century Literature (3)This course is a study of the major French authors and works of the seventeenth century, with emphasis on the classical theater. Prerequisite: FRE 202 with a grade of C or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered periodically based upon student need.FRE 407 Eighteenth Century Literature (3)This course is a study of the major French authors and works of the eighteenth century, with emphasis on the writers of the Enlightenment. Offered periodically based upon student need.FRE 409 Nineteenth Century Literature (3)This course examines major literary movements of the nineteenth century, especially Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, and Symbolism in poetry and the novel in France.
