Greensboro College Expands Academic Offerings:
English and Communication Studies Major

from Greensboro College Magazine,
Fall/Winter 2001-2002

The best of both worlds will be available to students who enroll in the division of modern languages and literatures' new English and communications studies major, according to assistant professor in the department of English and communications studies Denise Kohn.

"Our program is unique because students graduate from the program with a high level of professional courses and coursework in literary studies within the tradition of a liberal arts education. Students receive both a classical, liberal arts education and a professional studies education," Kohn said. The combination of professional writing and communications courses - such as business writing, public speaking and the program's innovative Web rhetoric class - with time-tested English curricula including Shakespearean studies and linguistics will give students an edge in professional life after college.

"This major will prepare students for a variety of careers in professional writing, editing and communications in publishing, journalism, public relations and business. In addition, the program is an excellent choice for students who are considering professional graduate studies," Kohn said.
