The Spanish program offers courses to satisfy the foreign language core requirement, and to pursue a major or a minor in Spanish or Spanish K-12 public school licensure.
In order to meet general education requirements for graduation, students must demonstrate foreign language proficiency through the elementary level in one foreign language for the B.A., B.S. and B.M.E. degrees. A student may demonstrate proficiency either by examination or by passing courses through the appropriate levels.
Curriculum - Major Requirements
A major in Spanish consists of 36 hours above Spanish 1120 (Elementary Spanish II). A student must achieve a grade point average of 2.0 or above in all courses attempted in the major. Course selection for the major should include the following:

Curriculum - Teacher Education Program Requirements
(See section entitled Education for requirements of all students seeking teacher licensure in any academic area.)
Students seeking licensure in K-12 Spanish are required to complete successfully the following courses beyond SPA 1120: SPA 2200, 2400, 2403, 2406, 3608, 3610 OR 3612, 3700, 3701, and 4700; one elective from the following courses: SPA 2404, 4336, 4338, 4340, 4343, 4500. Required professional courses are as follows: EDU 2000, EDU 2001, SPE 3000 or 2100, SPE 3001 or 2101, EDU 3100, PSY 3200, EDU 3700, EDU 3701, EDU 4100, EDU 4900, EDU 4930, EDU 4950, EDU 4960.
Students seeking teacher licensure must obtain at least a grade of C- in each and all professional education and specialty area courses. No Pass/Fail grades will be accepted. Students must complete all professional/specialty courses prior to student teaching.
For information on additional teacher education requirements, procedures, and timelines, consult the section of the Catalog entitled Education, as well as the Student Teaching, Undergraduate Orientation, and Field Experiences Handbooks available from the Spanish coordinator to the Teacher Education Program. Copies are also on reserve in the library. Students desiring NCDPI licensure should be aware that graduation with licensure may require more than the minimum 124 semester hours.

Spanish Courses
SPA 1000 Introduction to Spanish: Language Learning (4)
This course provides entering students who have no prior knowledge of Spanish or who have a poor background in Spanish with the opportunity to develop skills that will better prepare them for elementary course work in Spanish (SPA 1110). Greetings, basic vocabulary, grammar and introduction to simple phrases facilitate communication and understanding of fundamental language concepts. Based on placement results or recommendations from the Spanish faculty, students may be advised to take this course prior to enrolling in SPA 1110. Students who have successfully completed SPA 1110 with a grade of C- or better may not enroll in SPA 1000. This course does not fulfill the Foreign Language requirement in General Education. Offered every fall semester, based on student need.
SPA 1110 Elementary Spanish I (4)
This course is the first part of a two-semester elementary Spanish course sequence in which students acquire and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. Students will also learn about different aspects of the Spanish and Spanish-American cultures. Students who have taken SPA 1000 at Greensboro College must pass that course with a C- or better to enroll in SPA 1110. Successful completion of SPA 1110 or 1117 and SPA 1120 or 1127 satisfies the Foreign Language requirement in General Education. Offered every semester.
SPA 1117 Elementary Spanish I (4)
This course is the first part of a two-semester elementary Spanish course sequence in which students acquire and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. Students will also learn about different aspects of the Spanish and Spanish-American cultures. The content of this course is the same as for SPA 1110. This is a hybrid course that combines in-class and online components and is designed for students who are capable of working independently. Prerequisite: SPA 1000 with a grade of B- or better, or, for incoming freshmen, a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, or permission of the instructor. Successful completion of SPA 1110 or 1117 and SPA 1120 or 1127 satisfies the Foreign Language requirement in General Education. Offered at the discretion of the department.
SPA 1120 Elementary Spanish II (4)
This course is a continuation of the basic language principles introduced in SPA 1110 in which students will develop the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will continue to become familiar with different aspects of the Spanish and Spanish-American cultures. Successful completion of SPA 1110 or SPA 1117, and SPA 1120 or SPA 1127, satisfies the Foreign Language requirement in General Education. Prerequisite: SPA 1110 with a grade of C- or better, two years of high school Spanish or permission of the instructor. Offered every semester.
SPA 1127 Elementary Spanish II (4)
This course is a continuation of the basic language principles introduced in SPA 1110 or 1117 in which students will develop the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will continue to become familiar with different aspects of the Spanish and Spanish-American cultures. The content of this course is the same as for SPA 1120. This is a hybrid course that combines in-class and online components and is designed for students who are capable of working independently. SPA 2200 Intermediate Spanish (4)
In this course students will review the grammatical principles taught in SPA 1110 or 1117 and SPA 1120 or 1127 as they continue to develop their language skills and deepen their cultural knowledge. Prerequisite: SPAN 1120 or 1127 with a grade of C- or better, 3 years of high school Spanish, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered every semester.
SPA 2207 Intermediate Spanish (4)
This is an intermediate Spanish language, in which students continue to develop their language skills and cultural knowledge as they review the grammatical principles taught in SPA 1110 or 1117 and SPA 1117 or 1127. The content of this course is the same as for SPA 2200. This is a hybrid course that combines in-class and online components and is designed for students who are capable of working independently. Prerequisite: SPA 1120 or 1127 with a grade of B- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered at the discretion of the department.
SPA 2306 Spanish –Language Literature in Translation (4)
This course focuses on major Spanish and Spanish-American literary works in English translation. Classical and contemporary texts—in a variety of genres—will be read in their historical and sociopolitical context, utilizing a variety of critical approaches. This course is conducted in English. No background in Spanish is required. Prerequisite: ENG 1120. Satisfies the Global Perspective requirement in General Education or the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered fall 2007.
SPA 2308 Latino Literature and Culture (4)
In this course, students will become familiar with major female and male figures of Latino literature and culture. Students will analyze the life and work of authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Edward Rivera, Gary Soto, Rudolfo A. Anaya, Richard Rodríguez, Judith Ortiz-Coffer, Denise Chávez, Piri Thomas, and Nicholasa Mohr. This course will also examine the contributions made to the United States by cultural and professional icons such as Selena, JLo, Ricky Martin, Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, César Chávez, Henry Cisneros, Rita Moreno, Jimmy Smits, Robert Rodriguez, Andy García, and George López. SPA 2308 is conducted in English. No background in Spanish is required but will enhance the experience. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree.Prerequisite: ENG 1120. Offered periodically based upon student need.
SPA 2319 Topics in Spanish and Latin American Film (4)
This course will analyze a particular topic as presented in Spanish, Latin American, and Latino films. Topics may include “Gender,” “Family and Work,” “María Luisa Bemberg,” “Pedro Almodovar,” “Women Actors,” “Antonio Banderas,” “Andy García,” or “Authority and Censorship.” The cinematic theory and history needed to read each film critically will be learned as the selected topic is addressed. The course is conducted in English. Knowledge of the Spanish language will enhance viewing. Prerequisite: ENG 1120 or ENG 1122. Satisfies the Global Perspective requirement in General Education, or the Foreign Language or Literature option for the B.A. degree; counts toward the Women’s and Gender Studies minor. Offered periodically based upon student need.
SPA 2400 Conversation and Composition (4)
In this course students will review grammar and develop their oral and written skills by conversing about and writing compositions on everyday topics and cultural differences and similarities. Required for all Spanish majors and minors. Required for K-12 licensure and prerequisite for all upper-level Spanish courses for students seeking K-12 licensure. Students who already demonstrate an advanced proficiency in speaking and writing in Spanish may petition the department for a waiver of this course. Prerequisite: SPA 2200 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered every semester.
SPA 2403 Spanish Literature for Children and Adolescents (4)
This course introduces students to Spanish-language narrative, drama and poetry written for children and adolescents. Students will read and analyze folk stories, legends, poems, and plays useful in the teaching of literature and culture to children of diverse ages. Required for K-12 licensure. Prerequisite: SPA 2400 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Literature or Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based upon student need.
SPA 2404 Introduction to Literature (4)
This course introduces students to the study of Spanish-language literature through the analysis of literary texts selected specifically for the intermediate-level reader. Students will develop their ability to read closely in Spanish and to understand the relations between literary texts and a variety of historical and/or literary contexts. They will learn to orally express their ideas and observations in Spanish, and to write critical analyses of the texts in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPA 2400 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Literature or Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 2406 Spanish Phonetics (4)
This course has two objectives: a) to study in depth the Spanish sound system in its multiple dialectal manifestations, and b) to widen students’ cultural knowledge. The ultimate goal of this course is to lead to a higher enjoyment of the language and cultures of Spain and Latin America, an enhanced pronunciation, and improved communication skills. Required for Spanish majors and minors and for K-12 licensure. Prerequisite: SPA 2400 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered every semester.
SPA 2500 Spanish for the Professions (4)
This is a special topics course designed for the development of Spanish communication skills basic to a variety of professional settings. Course content will vary, dependent on student need, and may encompass the following: Spanish for medical professionals, for teachers, for social services, for business and finance, for law enforcement. Prerequisite: SPA 1120 or SPA 1127 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 2600 The Art of Translation and Interpretation (4)
This course is an introduction to the art of translation and interpretation. Students will review grammar and learn some dos and don’ts in translation. Various written materials will be examined, compared, and translated. The related skills of simultaneous translation or interpretation and dubbing will be briefly considered. During the course, students will continue to listen, speak, read, view, and write in Spanish as they widen their cultural knowledge. SPA 2600 may be applied toward the Spanish major or minor. Prerequisites: SPA 2400 or 2406 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based upon student need.
SPA 3608 Spanish Civilization and Literature (4)
This course is designed to acquaint students with the rich cultural heritage of Spain by studying its history, literature, music and other arts, and customs. Required for K-12 licensure. Satisfies the civilization requirement for the Spanish major and applies toward the Spanish minor. Satisfies the Literature or Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Prerequisites: SPA 2400, and either SPA 2403 or SPA 2404, and SPA 2406 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 3610 Spanish-American Civilization and Literature I (4)
This course is an overview of the cultural history and literature of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean (including Venezuela and Colombia). Major literary texts from this region—in a variety of genres—will be read in their historical and cultural contexts. The course content spans the colonial period to the present, with an emphasis on contemporary literature, society, and culture. Either SPA 3610 or 3612 is required for K-12 licensure, meets the civilization requirement for the Spanish major, and applies toward the Spanish minor. The course satisfies the Literature or Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Prerequisites: SPA 2400, and either SPA 2403 or SPA 2404, and SPA 2406 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Offered fall semester 2007.
SPA 3612 Spanish-American Civilization and Literature II (4)

SPA 3700 Pedagogy of Foreign Language (K-12) (3)
This course provides an overview of child and adolescent development and the corresponding implications for teaching foreign language K-12. Specific theories, methods and techniques for teaching second language and culture will be examined and demonstrated. Assessment, computer/technological applications, second language learning and the exceptional child, and a review of elementary, middle grades, and secondary curriculum are also included. Fieldwork provides an opportunity for students to apply these understandings. Required for K-12 licensure. Must be taken concurrently with SPA 3701. Prerequisite: SPA 3000-level courses with a grade of C- or better and admission to Teacher Education. Satisfies three hours of the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered every fall semester and periodically based on student need.
SPA 3701 Field Component for Pedagogy of Foreign Language (K-12) (1)
Required for all students seeking teacher licensure in Spanish. Must be taken concurrently with SPA 3700. Prerequisite: SPA 3000-level courses and admission to Teacher Education. Early fieldwork is a series of involved experiences sequentially planned to allow developmental opportunities for prospective teachers in actual classroom situations. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation for fieldwork assignments. Satisfies one hour of the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 3800 Internship (1-4)
Students may earn credit toward their major or minor in Spanish by working and learning in a Spanish-speaking environment. Students may not earn credit toward the major for both SPA 3800 and SPA 4900 if the Senior Experience is conducted as an internship. A maximum of four credit hours can be earned toward the Spanish major or minor by completing an internship. Prerequisite: Junior status. Satisfies one-four hours of the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 4336 Spanish-American Novel (4)
This course focuses on the Latin American novel since the “boom.” Novels by major female and male writers such as Gabriel García Márquez, Elena Poniatowska, María Luisa Bombal, Rosario Ferré, and Carlos Fuentes will be analyzed as students continue to develop their reading, writing, listening, viewing, and writing skills in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPA 2400, and either SPA 2403 or 2404, and SPA 2406 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Literature or Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 4338 The Short Story of Latin America (4)
This course covers the structure and history of the short story as a literary genre and focuses on short stories in Spanish America from the late nineteenth century to the present. Emphasis is placed on the work of contemporary writers. Prerequisites: SPA 2400, and either SPA 2403 or SPA 2404 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. SPA 4340 Spanish and Spanish-American Theater (4)
This course is an introduction to contemporary Spanish-language theater. Students will read and analyze plays by a variety of Spanish and Spanish-American playwrights in their historical and cultural context. Prerequisites: SPA 2400, and either SPA 2403 or SPA 2404, and SPA 2406 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of the instructor. SPA 4349 Spanish and Spanish-American Women Poets (4)
This course will focus on women poets of Spain and Latin America such as Alfonsina Storni, Olga Orozco, Dora Castellanos, Nancy Morejón, Rosario Castellanos, Elsa Cross, Claribel Alegría, Clementina Suárez, Gioconda Belli, Julia de Burgos, Juana de Ibarbourou, Clara Janés, Luisa Castro, Blanca Andreu, Ana María Fagundo, Pureza Canelo, and Gloria Fuertes. Their work will be analyzed in a literary, historical, and sociopolitical context. Prerequisites: SPA 2400, and either SPA 2403 or SPA 2404, and SPA 2406 with a grade of C- or better or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the Literature or Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Satisfies the requirements for a minor in Women’s Studies. Offered fall 2007.
SPA 4500 Special Topics (1-4)
This course provides an opportunity for advanced study in Spanish language, literature, or civilization. It may include a study program in any country whose official language is Spanish, an independent study, or special courses taught at Greensboro College. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. Satisfies one-four hours of the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
SPA 4700 Practicum in Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Schools (4)
This course gives the students more in-depth opportunities to observe and participate in teaching foreign language K-12. Students will have four weeks in each of three settings. Scheduled seminars are also included. Required for K-12 licensure. Prerequisites: SPA 2400 or 2406 with a grade of C- or better and admission to Teacher Education. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based upon student need.
SPA 4900 Senior Year Experience (4)
The Senior Year Experience is intended to help Spanish majors identify and articulate their strengths and needs, in order to determine how best to enhance their experience in the language. Spanish majors are required to meet formally with the faculty of the Spanish department at the beginning of the second semester of their junior year to discuss their plan for the Senior Year Experience. The Senior Year Experience may be conducted as an internship or the in-depth study of a topic, a time period, or an author. Prerequisite: Spanish major with senior status. Satisfies the Foreign Language option for the B.A. degree. Offered periodically based on student need.
