2001 SUMMER STUDY TOUR TO FRANCE
"SACRED ART, SACRED SPACES"

Professor Ray Martin of the Art Department and Dr. Nancy McElveen, professor of French, led "Sacred Art, Sacred Spaces," the 2001 Summer Study Tour to France. Highlights of the tour included a visit to Strasbourg, the home of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe; the château of Haut-Koeningsbourg; the Citadel and the World War I battlefields at Verdun; Reims cathedral; and the château of Chantilly. On Memorial Day, the group of 5 students and 2 faculty members visited the American Military Cemetery near Verdun, final resting place to more than 14,000 American soldiers who fought in the region during World War I. The tour ended with a stay in Paris, where the group visited

the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay, as well as the basilica of St-Denis, often considered the birthplace of Gothic architecture, the Sainte-Chapelle, the cathedral of Notre Dame, and the artists' haunts in Montmartre.
