The Palettes of Paris and Provence
The Departments of Art and French at Greensboro College are
pleased to announce the fifth Summer Study Tour to France. This year's
tour, "The Palettes of Paris and Provence," will take place May 20 to
June 2, 2003. Academic credit will be available to students registered
in ART 450 or FRE 450, Special Topics, in first summer session.
Tour Focus:
- the culture of the south of France, especially the areas of
Provence, the Languedoc-Roussillon, and Dordogne
- the landscapes of the Impressionist painters
Tour Highlights:
- Martigues, a charming port often called the "Venice of
Provence:
- St-Rémy-de-Provence, home of Vincent van Gogh and
birthplace of Nostradamus.
- Gordes, a town perched on the side of a hill, classified as
"one of the most beautiful villages of France," and made famous by
Peter Mayle's book A Year in Provence
- the studio of Paul Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence
- the city of Arles
- Carcassonne, a medieval walled city twice listed as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Toulouse, called "la ville rose" from the color of the
bricks used throughout the city
- Albi, home of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, painter of
cabarets, dance-halls, and circuses
- the medieval pilgrimage site of Rocamadour, another stop on
the route to Santiago de Compostela, where visitors have traditionally
climbed the 216 steps on their knees in penance
- Sarlat, and the Grotte de Font de Gaume, with its
Paleolithic cave paintings
- Vineyard visit, picnics, and opportunities for sketching,
painting, or photography
- Paris, with day trips to Chartes, with its magnificent
cathedral; to Auvers-sur-Oise, final resting place of Vincent van Gogh
and his brother Theo; and to Giverny, the home and gardens of Claude
Monet. Also included are visits to such Parisian landmarks as the
Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay and the artists' haunts of
Montmartre.
Tour Highlights:
- $3524, based on 12-15 paying participants
- Included in the cost are round-trip airfare from North
Carolina to Marseille, returning to North Carolina from Paris;
double-occupancy accommodations in tourist-class (2- or 3-star hotels)
with the accent on the local character; all hotels have private
facilities; continental breakfast and dinner throughout the tour;
airport transfer; transportation by private coach and public
transportation in major cities; all excursions and admissions on the
itinerary; and a tour director-guide who will accompany the group
throughout the tour.
- A non-refundable deposit of $350.00 will be due by December
13, 2002, with the balance due by March 17, 2003.
