Greensboro College Athletic Training Gets Full Accreditation from CAAHEP January 7, 2004
The Athletic Training Education Program at Greensboro College recently received full accreditation status from CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs). The college was notified in October, 2003 that its three-year accreditation-earning effort had been successful. The first step in the accreditation procedure involves two years of candidacy, a process developed to support programs working toward accreditation. After a site visit in February 2003, the college received a favorable report, but the final decision still had to be approved by the Joint Review Commission in Athletic Training, part of CAHHEP. After the Joint Review Commission met in July, its approval was forwarded to CAAHEP, the commission that then met in October and granted Greensboro College a full five years of accreditation. This process allows students to graduate with a degree in Athletic Training from a CAAHEP-accredited program. Students now have opportunities to complete clinical rotations in one of 17 sports at Greensboro College, in high schools, in outpatient rehabilitation clinics and in an orthopedist’s office. Greensboro College Assistant Professor of Athletic Training Michelle Lesperance notes: “This is a tremendous achievement for a school of our size. Achieving accreditation would have been impossible without the support of the administration. Our newly renovated facilities, the dedicated faculty and staff, and the strong curriculum are assets of our program that will give us an advantage over other programs.” She adds that the five-year accreditation will likely attract many more students to the Greensboro College athletic training education program due to the benefits of graduating from a CAAHEP-accredited program --PRIDE--
