Tracey
Comune Led Improved 2001
Pride Cross
Country Program
Second year coach Jill
Shusterman—a 1994 Greensboro graduate—and her Pride cross country teams
made their mark on the GC record books in 2001.
The Pride women finished third in the Dixie Conference
cross country meet in Fayetteville, NC. The Greensboro men finished fifth.
Tracey Comune became the first Pride runner since
1996 to earn DIAC first team honors as she finished 5th overall. GC’s Kristi
Hunter placed 14th, and made the Dixie second team.
Four women and three men ran in the NCAA South
Regional meet at Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.
The team was led by record-setting senior Comune
who broke the school record for the sixth time in Clinton with a 5-kilometer
time of 20:05. Her time was good enough for 37th overall in the meet.
“Tracey is one of the best examples of this team’s
work ethic,” Shusterman said. “She dropped her time from last year by more
than a minute.”
Freshman Amanda Herron
also set a personal best at the regional competition with a time of 23:16.
She finished 118th. Freshman Hunter finished 132nd (24:52) and senior Tara
Gibson finished 135th (25:27).
For the men, freshman James Teel
also set a personal best with a time of 31:17 over the eight kilometer
course. He placed 107th in the region. Senior Nick
Dishler ran a 32:01 (114th) and senior Lucas Conkle
finished 124th (34:35).
There were more highlights for the 2001 Pride harriers.
The GC men’s and women’s teams took first place at the Fayetteville Cross
Town Classic and the Four-Way Meet at Hagan Stone Park. Comune took first
at both events. On the men’s side, Teel took individual honors at the Cross
Town Classic.
