GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Greensboro College men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second and fifth respectively at the Dixie Conference Cross Country meet held at Hagan Stone Park on Saturday.

The Pride men had its best DIAC result ever with its runner-up performance. GC place behind perennial Dixie powerhouse CNU, which swept the first six places. Greensboro’s Tim Insley (Goldsboro, NC/East Wayne) was The Pride’s highest finisher. The freshman finished 12th with a personal best time of 28:53.

GC’s best previous DIAC result was third place in both 1996 and 1997. This season is Greensboro’s 15th year of men’s cross country

Temmate Michael Barnard (Durham, NC/Riverside) place 14th with a 19.10 clocking. Both Barnard and Insley earned second team all-conference with their placings.

Other Pride finishers were Clarence Kinley (Lexington, NC/South Davidson) who placed 16th and ran a 29:13; Doug Holbrook (Thomasville, NC/East Davidson) finished 18th with a 29:38; Nick Dishler (Baltimore, MD/Towson ) was 25th at 31:42 and Kevin Eagan (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon) finished 30th  with a 32:59 clocking.

Holbrook had finished first in ever Pride race prior to the DIAC meet. He had also broken school records in each of his last five races.

“Doug had been our leader the entire season,” said GC Head Coach Jill Shusterman. “We’ve been riding on his coat tails all season. Now, our other runners stepped-up, which made the difference.”

On the women’s side, Greensboro placed fifth out of six DIAC competitors. GC’s Kristi Hunter (Solon, OH/Solon) placed 15th, just one place behind second team conference recognition. Hunter ran a 26:38 5K. Rebecca Beninghove (Westminster, MD/ Westminster) was one place back in 16th with a 26:48 time.

Other Pride finishers were Amanda Herron (Palm Bay, FL/Bayside) who ran a 28:30 and was 25th; Kate Roberton (Rockville, MD/ Magruder) placed 42nd with a 32:46 and Keri Collins (Thomasville, NC/East Davidson) was 43rd with a 24:25.

The Pride harriers will run in the South regionals next Saturday at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va.
