The Greensboro
College cross country teams each had fine years in 2003. Team members improved
times each week and peaked at season’s end.
The Pride men’s
team finished third in the USA South Conference championships, just four
points behind second place Ferrum College. The meet was at Hagan Stone
Park in Pleasant Garden. Michael Barnard
and Doug Holbrook earned second team
all-conference honors. Holbrook and Barnard placed 12th and 14th respectively.
At the NCAA
regionals, GC’s men’s team placed 17th. Barnard led the team with a 51st
place finish and Holbrook came in 60th. Teammates Clarence
Kinley, Brian Holloway, James
Teel and Ian Prevas improved times
as the year progressed.
On the women’s
side, The Pride women’s team tied for 5th with Peace College in the
USA South Conference Meet. GC junior Kristi Hunter
earned first team all USA South honors with her 7th place finish. She then
placed 75th at the NCAA Regionals in Atlanta, Ga. with a time of 26:50.
“I think her
hard work during the summer and regular season paid off,” said Head Coach
Jason Tuggle. Hopefully during the off season she will continue to work
hard and continue to improve.”
Teammates
Amanda
Currie, Christina Daniels, Angelia
Hurst and Paris Buckner were
key in a dual meet win against Fayetteville State and at other events.
The outlook
for next season is promising. The men’s team is young and the women’s team
will field just one senior. Tuggle is recruiting 4 women and 3 men to the
program.
“With our new
recruits, and the progress we made this year, we will be even more competitive
in the conference next season,” Tuggle said.
