MAKING STRIDES

The Greensboro College men's and women's cross country teams finished yet another historical season in 1996 as they recorded a number of firsts in the five-year history of the programs. Individually, members posted numerous team records while also attaining personal goals along the way.

The men were paced this season by sophomore Paul Williams. Williams, the 1995 team MVP, consistently finished first for The Pride and earned 1st Team All DIAC honors for the second consecutive year by finishing sixth at the Dixie Conference meet. Freshman James Moffat made an immediate impact as he garnered second Team All DIAC honors with an eighth place finish at the Dixie Conference meet. Moffat was also honored as Rookie of the Week in the Dixie for his eighth place finish at the Methodist Invitational.

The women were led this season by sophomore transfer Amanda Watson and senior Rebecca Ickes. Watson's impact was felt immediately s she was honored as DIAC Rookie of the Week numerous times and also landed a spot on theDIAC 1st Team with a fourth place finish at the Dixie Conference meet. Ickes also delivered some strong finishes as she too was a member of the DIAC. 1st Team as she finishing seventh at the Dixie meet.

Highlighting the women's season was the first ever team victory. This historic event took place at the Greensboro College Invitational as the women places first out of five teams competing. At the meet, rebecca Ickes led The Pride as she finished third overall. Ickes was followed by Amanda Watson (fifth), Beth Bostrom (seventh), Alison Rogers (eighth), Heather Thorstad (ninth), and Beth Werner (eleventh).

Other runners making significant contributions for the men and women this season were Marshall Steinmann and Glen Anderson for the men and Bostrom, Rogers and Thorstad for the women. Bostrom, Rogers and Thorstad were each honored as 2nd Team DIAC performers for their performances at the Dixie Conference meet as they finished 10th, 11th and 14th, respectively.
