COMUNE LEADS HARRIERS TO
BEST SEASON IN YEARS

Bill Chambers, Greensboro College’s cross country coach, did a fine job with The Pride  cross country program, particularly the women harriers, in 1999.

At the Dixie Conference championships, which were hosted by The Pride at Hagan Stone Park,  the GC women finished third. In fact, Greensboro was just one point away from second place.

Leading the way for GC was Tracey Comune. The sophomore from Pequannock, NJ, finished 9th at the DIAC meet and earned second team honors.

Earlier this year, Comune set a Greensboro College all-time record. On Sept. 15, Comune ran 21:58 5K. That time bettered the old Pride mark of 22:30, set by Alison Rogers in 1997.

Most of the rest of the 1999 GC squad peaked and set personal best times toward the end of the season. These included: Mary Ann Germain (24:04); Staci Clark (24:11); Tara Gibson (24:27) and Kelli Staples (24:37) at the Dixie meet.

The 2000 squad will  miss senior captain Beth Bostrom next year. The rest of the team returns, and should improve on this year’s performance.

On the men’s side, the GC men didn’t fare as well as the women. Phil Tensley was the top Pride male runner. Tensley—who doubles as a GC basketball player— finished 14th at the Dixie meet. His finish was a personal best of 30:27.
