Mitchell Era Begins With Best
DIAC Finish & Honors
Under first-year Head Coach Neal
Mitchell, the Greensboro College football team finished 4-6 and 4-2
in Dixie Conference games—GC’s best DIAC finish ever.
Bolstered by a strong defense that
allowed just 17 points per game, The Pride was more competitive in all
games than any other GC grid season. All of GC’s losses were by 14 points
or fewer, and three defeats were by seven points or less.
“We built a strong foundation for
our program this year,” said Mitchell. “We were in the conference race
late in the season and have some regrets there, but overall our staff feels
very good about where we are going.”
Following the season, GC dominated
the all-conference team. The Pride placed a conference-high 12 honorees
on the DIAC team, including 7 on the first team. For the fourth straight
year Pride football had representation on the Verizon-CoSIDA regional
academic football team. GC had three football players on the 2002 academic
team and Justin Wilder made the national second team.
The 2002 season had a number of highlights
for the green and white, including GC’s first-ever victory over DIAC rival
Methodist College, 13-3. The win was the first in 6 tries against the Monarchs.
Additionally, The Pride had an exciting
24-21 homecoming win over Shenandoah University. The SU-GC game saw Greensboro
block three Hornet kicks and win the game in overtime with a 40-yard Erik
Naglee field goal.
Greensboro’s other victories were
in the home opener vs. Chowan College, 20-16; and at Averett University,
24-14.
GC had 11 graduating seniors who
made a positive impression on The Pride program. Josh Daniels closed
his career as The Pride’s all-time tackle leader (253). Wilder leaves as
the all-time punt-returner and single-season reception leader (44). Four-year
starter Roy Tesh played center in ‘02 and received post-season recognition
every season at GC.
Yet Pride football has many standout
performers who inspire optimism for the 2003 campaign. Three sophomores
have the GC offensive backfield in good hands for the future. Anthony
“Boomer” Durham set a Pride record with 121 completions and passed
for a DIAC-best 1474 yards. In the backfield, Quentin Caldwell (834
yards) and Marc Clapp (4.7 yards per carry) form a dynamic running
duo.
