Neal Mitchell

Greensboro College Head Football Coach

Neal Mitchell

Neal Mitchell enters his second season coaching Greensboro College football in 2003. In his rookie year, Mitchell led The Pride to a record of 4-6 and 4-2 in Dixie Conference games—GC’s best DIAC finish ever.

Bolstered by a strong defense that allowed just 17 points per game, The Pride was more competitive in all games than any other GC grid season. All of GC’s losses were by 14 points or fewer, and three defeats were by seven points or less.

Following the season, GC dominated the all-conference team. The Pride placed a conference-high 12 honorees on the DIAC team, including 7 on the first team. For the fourth straight year Pride football had representation on the Verizon-CoSIDA regional academic football team. GC had three football players on the 2002 academic team and one on the national second team.

“We built a strong foundation for our program this year," Mitchell said. "Our staff feels very good about where we are going.”

Mitchell arrived from Colorado College where he has coached from 1997-'01. He served as assistant head coach last year for the Tigers, and as the defensive coordinator for the past five seasons.

In 2001, Mitchell's defense recorded two shutouts and held opponents to just 293 yards-per-game

A 1992 graduate of Washington Univ., Mitchell was a four-year starter at defensive end and an all conference selection as a senior. Mitchell's coaching resume also includes stops at Vanderbilt University (1994) as an administrative assistant, Louisiana State University (1995) as a graduate assistant and Wash U. (1996) as defensive line coach.

While at LSU, Mitchell was on a staff that led the Tigers to a bowl game win over Michigan State. During that same season, LSU recorded its first winning season in six years. At Washington University, he was part of a conference champion team.

Mitchell and his wife, Jennifer, live in Greensboro. They have a son, Jack, and a daughter, Abbey.
