Pride blocks Shenandoah win; GC Gets Three Blocked Kicks in 24-21 OT Win

GREENSBORO, N.C.--Erik Naglee’s 40-yard field goal in overtime gave Greensboro College a 24-21 victory over Dixie Athletic rival Shenandoah.  

The Pride (2-4, 2-1) played its second overtime game in the history of the school. GC’s defense forced the Hornets (1-5, 1-2) to a 34 yard field goal attempt, which was blocked, and would setup Naglee’s kick.

The Greensboro special teams also had a key role on its first two scores. GC blocked two punts on consecutive Shenandoah second quarter possessions for.  Both resulted in Pride touchdowns.

The first came with the Hornets leading 7-0. GC’s Alex Amaya (Ft. Lauderdale , Fla./Cooper City) blocked Ben Williard at the Shenandoah 25-yard line and advanced the ball to the one-yard line. Quentin Caldwell (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) ran the ball in for the score on the next play.

With a 7-7 game, and the ball at the Hornets own 30, the special teams would play a key role once again.  Willard’s next punt was blocked by The Pride’s Larice Peoples (Johnsonville, SC/Johnsonville).  Dennis Stokes (Elkin, NC/Elkin) picked the ball up on the nine yard line and advanced it to the SU one.  On fourth-and-one, with no time remaining in the first half, the Pride would take a 14-7 lead into halftime with a touchdown strike from Boomer Durham (Elliott City/Elliott City) to Justin Wilder (Wendell, NC/Ravenscroft).  

With Shenandoah leading 21-14 in the fourth quarter, GC would stage a 10 play, 82 yard drive that took 3:48 from the clock.  The key plays of the drive came on a pass interference to from Durham to Ricky Moore (Raleigh, NC/Word of God)  The Pride would take advantage of getting into Hornets territory, and score on a 13-yard fade pass from Durham to Moore, tying the game and sending it to overtime.        

On defense, Josh Daniels (Wanchese, NC/Manteo) was the game's leading tackler with 16 (5 lead). Fellow senior Marvin Mullings (Queens, NY/Far Rockaway) had 15 tackles (7 lead).  

Shenandoah out-gained GC in yardage 345 to 179. The Hornets won the time of possession battle 37:20 to 22:40. SU’s Dennis Robart had 19 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown.

GC is tied with CNU for second place in the conference. Greensboro is one game behind first place Ferrum (3-0) in the DIAC. The Pride--which hosts the Panthers in two weeks--plays at Averett next Saturday, Kickoff is 2 p.m.
