Greensboro, NC -- Sophomore
quarterback Josh Smith (Goldsboro,
NC/Rosewood) ran for one score and
passed for another to lead Guilford past
Greensboro, 21-7, in Saturday's sixth
annual Gate City Souper Bowl football
game at Guilford's Armfield Athletic
Center.
The win snaps the Quakers' (2-3) two-game
losing streak and evens the
Soup Bowl series at three wins apiece.
The Pride (1-3) had won the two
previous meetings between Greensboro's
two Division III football-playing
institutions.
"They wanted to stop our running game
and played man coverage," said GC Head Coach Neal Mitchell. "We
had to get our passing game going. We needed to step-up, but didn'tmake
the plays."
The Quakers held GC's rushing game
to a season-low 82 yards. Quentin Caldwell (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) entered
the game in the top 30 on NCAA Division III runners. He gained just 46
yards on 20 carries against the Quakers.
GC also converted just one of 13 third
down opportunities. Additionally The Pride was called for 14 penalties
for 122 yards in the contest.
Guilford opened the scoring with 35
seconds left in the first half
when Smith hit junior Marcus Ballard
(Burgaw, NC/Pender) with a 20-yard
touchdown pass. Smith's fifth touchdown
toss of the season ended an
effective two-minute drill that covered
55 yards in seven plays.
The Quakers' defense produced its
third touchdown in five games
midway through the third quarter
when junior nose tackle Brian Person (Hope
Mills, NC/Havelock) sacked Greensboro
sophomore quarterback Anthony Durham
(Ellicott City, MD/Howard) and jarred
the ball loose. Guilford sophomore
linebacker Kyle Becher (Wallace,
NC/East Duplin) recovered it in the end
zone for a 13-0 Guilford lead.
Greensboro answered on its ensuing
possession with a nine-play,
57-yard scoring drive capped by Durham's
nine-yard scoring pass to junior
wideout Ricky Moore (Raleigh,
NC/Word of God) with 5:05 left in the third
quarter. Durham set up the score
with a 48-yard completion to senior
George Washington (Brooklyn, NY/Manhattan).
Greensboro took advantage of a Guilford pass interference penalty in the
end zone that set up a
first-and-goal situation from the
Guilford two.
The teams traded punts before Guilford
mounted its second-longest
scoring drive of the year, a 10-play,
80-yard series that used over five
minutes of the fourth quarter. The
Quakers ran the option on nine of the
10 plays, including Smith's keeper
from four yards out that gave the hosts
a 19-7 edge with 10:02 left in the
game. Smith connected with senior
receiver Chris McKinney (Greensboro,
NC/Apex (NC State)) for the two-point
conversion and a 21-7 Guilford lead.
Greensboro came back and moved to
the Guilford 39-yard line before
failing on fourth down and giving
the ball back to Guilford. The Pride's
final scoring chance ended at the
Quakers' five-yard line with 1:16 left in
the game when Becher stopped sophomore
running back Caldwell for no gain on fourth and inches. The stop ended
the Pride's 17-play, 70-yard drive.
Guilford's offensive line won the
Quakers' Most Valuable Player Award
while Durham won Greensboro's game
MVP prize. The Quakers' line rebounded
from a pair of lackluster outings
and helped Guilford roll up 185 rushing
yards, 112 yards in the second half
when the Quakers enjoyed a five-minute,
24-second advantage in time of possession.
Senior running back Brandon
Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) paced
the Quakers with 78 rushing yards on 22
carries. Smith completed nine of
20 passes for 120 yards and a score.
Sophomore cornerback Travis Boyd
(Pompano Beach, FL/Coconut Creek) paced
the defense with a career-high eight
tackles in his first start of the
season.
Durham finished with 225 yards and
a score on 20-of-43 passing.
Senior receiver Justin Wilder
(Wendell, NC/Ravenscroft) made a game-high
seven catches for 68 yards while
Washington added five grabs for 80 yards.
Senior linebacker Josh Daniels
(Wanchese, NC/Manteo) led the Pride's
defense with a game-high 12 tackles,
including a sack.
Guilford visits Ferrum next Saturday
(10/12) in its final non-conference game of the year, while Greensboro
visits Dixie Conference rival Christopher Newport next week.
