Second-year
Head Coach Neal Mitchell’s Greensboro
College football team finished 3-7 and 1-5 in the USA South Conference
games.
Highlights
for The Pride were a 20-0 win over Newport News, a double OT win with Chowan,
and winning the Souper Bowl over Guilford.
The Pride’s
defense was perhaps the strongest the program has developed. Early in the
year, Greensboro College was ranked 3rd in the nation in defense, allowing
only 125 yards per game.
Following the
season, Greensboro College players earned six honors on the 2003 USA South
All Conference Football Team. Leading the way were three seniors who were
first team picks. Cortney Gunter
and Ricky Tattersall made the
USA South first team on defense. Erik Naglee
was named first team punter.
Linebacker
Tattersall led the team in tackles with 107 while intercepting one pass
for 60 yards and a touchdown. He became The Pride career leader in tackles
(259) after the season finale. Gunter recorded 65 tackles and led the team
in sacks with seven. A defensive lineman, he also intercepted one pass
and returned it for a touchdown and blocked six kicks on special teams.
Naglee punted
68 times for a average of 41.4 yards, which ranked him 6th in the nation.
He placed 12 punts inside the 20-yard-line. The senior also led a list
of three second team honorees. As a kicker, Naglee connected on four field
goals and made 13 extra points. He closed his Pride career with four first
team and three second team all-conference awards.
The other honorees
were defensive end Justin Patterson
and defensive back Mantron Davis.
(See
below for all honors.)
For the fifth
straight year Pride football had representation on the CoSIDA regional
academic football team. GC’s Luke Irwin,
Naglee, and Davis were recognized for their academic and athletic prowess
this season.
Pride football
expects many standout performers returning for the 2004 season. On the
defense, GC lost 3 starters, but is returning 8 strong players. On the
offensive end, GC loses 2 and returns 9. |
