GREENSBORO – Averett's Anthony Morris blocked Erik Naglee's 50-yard field goal attempt with 37 seconds remaining to preserve a 16-14 win over Greensboro College at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday.

The win was the first in four tries for the Cougars (4-2, 2-1 USA South) over The Pride (3-4, 1-3).

With 8:41 remaining in the contest, GC took its first lead when Jamal Licorish scampered four yards to give The Pride a 14-10 advantage.

Averett came back, however, with an eight play, 70-yard drive. Scott Swann (18-31, 224 yards, 2 INT) connected with Jeff Hughley on a 12-yard touchdown pass. The PAT missed and the score was 16-14 with 2:39 remaining.

The Pride, primarily behind the running of Licorish (17 carries 51 yards), reached as far as the Cougar 33-yard line on the ensuing series. Averett called two timeouts trying to freeze Naglee, who was attempting to match his career long kick. The snap was low and bobbled by holder Justin Roberson before the kick was blocked.

The Cougars began the game with a 14 play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by a 22-yard James Thurnes field goal. Naglee was unable to convert a 26-yard first quarter field goal attempt.

In the second quarter, Averett’s Scott Swann completed a 55-yard pass to Hughley that gave the Cougars a 10-0 lead.

GC scored its first touchdown with 49 seconds left in the half. Roberson (12-29, 124 yards) found Ricky Moore in the left corner of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. The halftime score was 10-7 in favor of the Cougars.

Seniors Ricky Tattersall and Ian Mosher led GC on defense with nine and seven tackles respectively. David Baity made five tackles and had one sack that resulted in a 10-yard Cougar loss.

The Pride, which ends the year with three straight road games, travels to Ferrum next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
