October 11, 2003 by Jon Cole, Pride Sports Information GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Mario Marin rushed for 163 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns and led 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport to a 42-10 win over Greensboro College at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday. With the win, CNU took charge of the USA South Athletic Conference race. The Captains improved to 4-1 and and 2-0. GC fell to 3-2 and 1-1. In the first quarter, the Captain's Marin scored on a one-yard dive to cap 10 play, 40-yard drive. With 2:31 remaining in the quarter, however, GC countered with a Justin Roberson to Damon Day three-yard scoring pass. The Pride's drive was 12 plays and 75-yards and knotted the game at 7-7. Branden Jones ran 11 yards for a 14-7 CNU lead early in the quarter. The Pride answered again, this time with a 21-yard field goal by Erik Naglee. Roberson completed 22 of 38 passes for 212 yards, as The Pride offensive unit gained 201 yards of total offense. Most of his passing yards (164), however, were gained in the first half. Wide receiver Ricky Moore had five catches for 68 yards at the break. In the second half, CNU double-covered Moore and he had no receptions. Day had seven receptions totaling 89 yards and one touchdown. Defensively for The Pride, senior Cortney Gunter had eight tackles, recorded one sack, and was responsible for a blocked CNU field goal attempt. The Captains scored the next 28 points. CNU’s Phillip Jones found Marcus Parrott open to give the Captains a 21-10 halftime lead on a 73-yard pass play. In the third quarter, CNU turned its offensive focus to the ground game. Running back Marin scored on runs from 38 and 69-yards. Marin had 16 carries and 165 yards on the day. This Captains had a 35-10 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. CNU closed the game scoring with a drive that lasted seven plays for 58 yards. Jones threw to George Jones for a 27-yard touchdown. The Captains held GC to minus-13 yards rushing on 30 carries. The Pride has just 19 total running yards in its last three contests. The GC defense, which entered the game second in the nation in total defense, allowed 275 running yards. "We got punched in the nose by a very good football team today," said Pride Head Coach Neal Mitchell. The Pride now takes to the road with a USA South gridiron clash with Shenandoah on Saturday, October 18th. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. In the all-time series, Greensboro leads 3-0.
