By Jon Cole, Pride sports information

Greensboro, NC – Defense ruled as Greensboro College (3-1) won the Seventh Gate City Souper Bowl, 13-7, over Guilford (1-3) at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday. The Pride scored two defensive touchdowns and held Guilford to one score in the victory.

The victory gives Greensboro College a 4-3 advantage in the overall series for the Souper Bowl. It’s also the second time that The Pride has been 3-1 in a season, matching the effort of the 2001 team.

The game's first tally of the game came when Greensboro linebacker Rick Tattersall intercepted a pass and returned it 60-yards for a touchdown. Erik Naglee's PAT made the scored 7-0.

Tattersall led the GC defense with 11 tackles and was named GC's Souper Bowl MVP. Guilford’s MVP honor went to defensive back Chase Waterhouse.

In the second quarter, Greensboro scored its second defensive touchdown when at the 7:30 mark, The Pride’s Brad Curtis recovered a Calvin Lockhart fumble in the end zone, giving Greensboro a 13-0 lead after a missed PAT.

With under two minutes to go in the second quarter, the Quakers struck from 39-yards out, when Micah Rushing hauled in a pass from Smith and cut the deficit to 13-7 heading into the half.

Despite 234 yards of total offense for Guilford College, and penetrating into GC four times in the second half, the Quakers were unable to manage any points.  Instead a battle of punters ensued in the second half. GC’s Naglee won the battle with 13 punts averaging 38.8 yards. He set a new GC record with a 72-yard kick and broke the mark his mark set last week against Salisbury by one yard.

GC tailback Quentin Caldwell led The Pride on the ground  with 20 rushes for 54 yards.  Quarterback Justin Roberson (-28 passing, 59 yards) added 30 yards on eight attempts for GC.

The Pride will host Christopher Newport (3-1, 1-0) , which is tied for first in the USA South, next Saturday at Jamieson Stadium. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
