WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University erased two years of bad memories Saturday afternoon with a 29-13 USA South Conference victory over Greensboro College. Shenandoah (4-2, 2-1) achieved a measure of revenge with the Homecoming Day victory; GC (3-3, 1-2) had defeated the Hornets the last two seasons on the strength of big plays on special teams. The Hornets turned the tables in that area with a game clinching touchdown by Chris Delfin with 2:38 to play after recovering a muffed Pride punt, but that score just made the outcome academic as SU dominated play throughout. Shenandoah outgained its visitors 361 to 194, including a 242 to 33 yard advantage on the ground. The Hornets held the ball over 37 minutes and ran a season high 82 plays against a defense that up until two weeks ago was the second rated defense in Division III. Sophomore Anthony Frates (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) was the workhorse in this ball control offense; Frates had career high 126 yards rushing on 27 carries. However, it was the passing game that made the difference in the contest. Senior Wayne Hogwood finished the day 7 for 15 for 119 yards and two touchdowns against no interceptions while SU picked of Greensboro quarterback Justin Roberson three times. Hogwood hit junior Mike McVearry for two first half scores, both on fourth down and long. Hogwood was just 3 for 10 in the first half, but all three passes went for a first down and the two to McVearry resulted in touchdowns. On both occasions, the 6'5" receiver went to the front corner of the end zone and outjumped a GC defender for the ball. The Pride made a game of it, briefly, with a Ricky Moore 28 yard touchdown reception from fellow receiver Damon Day with 6:26 left. Erik Naglee, however, missed the extra point and the visitors remained two scores behind at 22-13. SU answered that score with the Delfin touchdown and effectively ended the contest. Roberson led GC with 12 completions for 133 yards and two touchdowns but threw three interceptions and was sacked three times. Ted Hoyle added 52 yards rushing.
