W&L SCORES FOUR SECOND QUARTER TDs AND DEFEATS GC, 27-14; RICKY TATTERSALL SETS PRIDE TACKLE RECORD

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee exploded for three touchdowns in the final 2:26 of the first half to defeat Greensboro College, 27-14, in Division III football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Greensboro (3-7) assumed a 7-0 lead with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter as freshman running back Ted Hoyle (Denton, N.C./South Davidson) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. The play was set up by a 58-yard interception return by junior defensive back Mantron Davis (Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest) to the W&L 10-yard line just two plays earlier.

The Generals (3-7) evened the game at 7-7 with 9:52 remaining in the second quarter as sophomore wide receiver Clark Kensinger (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna,Va./James Madison).

W&L assumed a 14-7 lead with 2:26 left in the half as sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. The Generals then successfully executed an onside kick and scored three plays later as freshman running back Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) found the end zone from 1-yard out.

After stopping Greensboro on three plays, the Generals scored again, this time on a 28-yard strike from Tweardy to senior wide receiver Jonathan Brimer (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County) with 16 seconds left in the half for a 27-7 halftime edge.

Greensboro was limited by 13 penalties for 118 yards and by holding the ball for just 15:28 of the game. W&L controlled the ball for the other 44:32.

Senior defensive back Ian Mosher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) and senior linebacker Rick Tattersall (Swansboro, N.C./Northeastern) led the Pride defense with 12 tackles each. Tattersall became the GC leader in career tackles (259) in the game. He passed former teammate Josh Daniels '03 (253 tackles).

On offense, Greensboro was paced by Hoyle's 35 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. Sophomore quarterback Justin Roberson (Hertford, N.C./Perquimans County) completed just 10-of-23 passes for 59 yards and one touchdown and senior wide receiver Ricky Moore (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) caught two passes for 39 yards and a third quarter touchdown.
