DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University
tallied 529 yards of total offense Saturday in a 38-7 win over Greensboro
College at the Cougar Den. The Averett defense held Greensboro to only
269 yards of total offense.
Pride Senior running back Quentin
Caldwell, however, had another strong outing. Caldwell rushed for 108
yards on 17 carries and garnered his third 100-yard game of the season.
Caldwell also scored GC's only touchdown
of the day. His 9-yard run made put The Pride on the board with 11:27 remaining
in the game. Chris Palme added the extra point for the 38-7 score.
The Cougars (5-2, 2-2 USA South)
scored early and often, starting with a 7-play drive of 66 yards on their
opening possession. Averett nickel and dimed the Pride during the first
few plays of the drive, before Sadane Munoz broke free for a 24-yard touchdown
gallop with 12:56 remaining in the first half. James Thurnes added the
extra point for a 7-0 Averett lead.
Averett led 21-0 at halftime. Freshman
Chris Baskerville gave the second best rushing performance in AU history
with 166 yards on 19 carries. Munoz scored two touchdowns, while running
for 60 yards on six carries.
Kelvin Hutcheson led the Cougar defense
with 16 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. GC's Mantron Davis
had 11 tackles (9 solo) and one interception for The Pride (2-5, 1-3).
