Late TD Lifts Chowan Over Greensboro College,
21-20
GREENSBORO —Tyvonne Johnson
caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Helmlinger with 3:46 remaining
to lift Chowan College (1-1) to a 21-20 win over Greensboro College (0-1)
on Saturday at Jamieson Stadium.
For Johnson, the TD catch was his
second of the game. The freshman scored in the second quarter on a pass
from Taylor Furlough that made the score 7-7--which was the count at halftime.
GC appeared to have set themselves
up for the victory with a 13-point fourth quarter that included two Chris
Palme field goals from 37 and 48-yards away.
In between the field goals, freshman
Mike Pollard scampered four yards for a touchdown. The Pride held a
20-14 advantage with 7:40 remaining in the contest.
“Our recent games against Chowan
have always been tough," said Pride Head Coach Neal Mitchell. "We
had good scoring opportunities early but did not capitalize. We converted
better in the second half, but were in the position of having to come from
behind.”
After a scoreless first quarter,
GC tallied at the 10:22 mark of the second period. Freshman J.R. Hair
returned
a CC punt 69-yards for a 7-0 lead. The punt return set a new GC record.
CC's Adam Powers nearly matched Hair's
return in the third quarter. He raced 65 yards for a score on his return.
Ricky Mobley led the Braves on the
ground. He carried 16 times for 54 yards. GC's offensive star was Corey
Eadie. He caught 8 balls for 71 yards.
Prior to the game, Eadie and teammates
James
Matthews and Demaro Sherrod were honored before the Sept. 11th
crowd of 1,285. The three recently served active duty in the United States
military.
With the win, The Braves broke a
four-game GC winning streak in the series--which stands at 4-4. GC travels
to face North Carolina Wesleyan next Saturday at 1 p.m. Ferrum host Chowan
at the same time.
