3rd QUARTER COSTLY IN 38-17 LOSS FOR PRIDE

GREENSBORO — Ferrum College scored 28 unanswered third-quarter points to beat Greensboro College, 38-17, at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday.

After trailing 17-10 at halftime, Ferrum (4-4, 1-3) began their scoring frenzy with a 54-yard pass completion from Matt Spangler to a sprinting Carlton Hughes who managed to get behind The Pride’s (2-6, 1-4) coverage, knotting the game at 17-17, midway through the third quarter.

FC charged 67 yards down the field, with a key play coming on a 29-yard pass completion from starting quarterback Jermaine Pitts (4-11, 76 yards, 1 TD) to Terrell Mulford (11 carries, 86 yards, 1 TD), setting up a five-yard scamper into the end zone by Mulford just three plays later.

Following a GC interception for a touchdown return of 19-yards by linebacker Darren Venable, the Panthers assumed a 31-17 lead.

GC's Anthony Williams then fumbled a kickoff return. Ferrum took over at The Pride 22-yard line. In just one play, Pitts found Chris Silk for a touchdown pass and a Ferrum 38-17 lead.

The Panthers scored the games opening points, after capping off a seven play, 62 yard possession that culminated with a Vic Davidson four-yard run into the end zone at the 11:45 mark of the game.

The GC defense forced a Kevin Evans fumble, setting up the drive at the Ferrum 35-yard line. The Pride converted one of its four third downs of the afternoon, when QB Justin Roberson (9-20, 100 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) found a leaping Tyrelle Lee in the right corner of the end zone for the game-tying touchdown.

Just over two minutes later, running back Quentin Caldwell (17 carries, 72 yards) gave GC its first lead of the game. He he ran two yards for the touchdown, converting an opportunity set up by The Pride’s Richard Burton who blocked and returned a Ferrum punt for 16-yards to inside the Panthers five-yard line.

Ferrum would answer to start the second quarter, as Matt Novak punched through a 26-yard field goal attempt, just over five minutes into the frame. GC’s Chris Palme responded with a 44-yard conversion of his own, and score 17-10 as both teams headed to the locker room.

Leading The Pride defensively was Mantron Davis with nine tackles (seven solo). Charles Cobb contributed with seven tackles. Defensive lineman David Baity registered one sack, and teammate Brad Curtis recorded the other for The Pride. As for Ferrum, Craig Ford led all tacklers with seven (six solo) as well as one sack. Also registering sacks for the Panthers was Darren Venable, Phillip Monk, and T.J. Holmes Jr.

The Pride returns home next weekend for another USA South match-up, this time coming against conference leader Methodist College. Game time is 1 p.m.
