Pride Wins Fifth of Eight Souper Bowls, 28-7;

Defense Holds Guilford to 12 2nd-Half Yards

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Quentin Caldwell rushed for a game-high 126 yards as visiting Greensboro College defeated Guilford College, 28-7, at Armfield Athletic Stadium on Saturday.

Greensboro ran for 309 yards and spoiled Guilford's homecoming in the game. The Pride improved to 1-3 with the win while the Quakers fell to 0-4. The eighth Gate City Souper Bowl was played before a series record crowd of 4,159.

"Winning the Souper Bowl is always a season highlight for us," said Greensboro College Head Coach Neal Mitchell. "But I think for this team, getting a win will a bigger thing for us and can help us down the road."

After a scoreless first quarter, Marc Clapp (18 carries, 86 yards) got Greensboro on the board with a three-yard run with 14:56 left in the second quarter. Corey Eadie (6 catches for 60 yards) caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Justin Roberson (9-14, 92 yards) to make the scored 14-0.

The Quakers responded with a four-play, 63-yard drive that was capped by Desmond Jordan's 17-yard TD run. The score remained 14-7 at the break.

Neither team scored in third quarter and The Pride held Guilford scoreless in the fourth quarter, too. The Greensboro College defense held the Quakers to 149 total yards on 49 plays. The Pride also stopped Guilford for lost yardage 11 times and recorded five QB sacks in the contest. Alan Revels and Charles Cobb collected five tackles apiece for the green and white. Guilford gained just 12 yards in the second half.

The visiting team put two more scores on the board in the final period. Damon Day found the end zone on a four-yard end-around run with 10:20. Freshman Mike Pollard took and end-around up the gut for a one-yard scamper with 7:23 left in the game.

Freshman J.R. Hair earned Souper Bowl MVP honors for Greensboro. Hair returned six punts for 102 yards had one interception. Jordan (77 rushing yards on 17 carries) was named the Quaker MVP.

Started in 1997, each year the Souper Bowl benefits a local charity with the donation of canned goods and other food items. Fans received free admission to Saturday's game with the contribution of a nonperishable food to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Approximately 3,000 pounds of food were collected in food drives on each campus and at Saturday's game. Greensboro's three-game winning streak is the longest in the series' history.

The Pride returns to USA South Conference play next Saturday. GC plays at 17th ranked Christopher Newport at 1 p.m. Guilford seeks its first win and hopes to spoil Ferrum's homecoming and kicks off at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
