GENERALS MARCH TO 21-7 WIN OVER
PRIDE IN SEASON FINALE
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Washington
& Lee University defeated Greensboro College, 21-7, in a non-conference
season finale for both teams at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday.
The Generals rolled up 293 yards
to The Pride's 69. Quarterback Greg Tweardy lead the way for the
visitors (24-30, 153 yards). With the win, W&L (6-4) earned its fist
winning season since 1995.
After a scoreless first quarter,
GC (2-8) was the first to tally in the game. Jamal Licorish blocked
a General's punt that was recovered by fellow classmate Dallas Daniels.
Daniels returned the ball 15 yards for a touchdown. Chris Palme's
PAT made the score 7-0.
On the ensuing possession, Washington
& Lee tied the game. Colton Ward ran six-yards for a TD that capped
a 55-yard, 8-play drive.
General Ben Long then tacked on a
25-yard field goal with 5:38 left in the second quarter. W&L held a
10-7 halftime advantage.
Long converted another field goal
in the third quarter. His second boot measured 35 yards and came with 1:53
remaining. The Generals had a 13-7 lead.
Following a fumble at the GC 31-yard
line, Washington
& Lee went 26 yards on 7 plays
for the game's final scoring drive. Michael Lackett (13 carries, 38 yards)
scored from 2-yards out for the touchdown. Tweardy converted a two-point
PAT when he hooked up with Ward, making the final score 21-7.
Senior linebacker Brad Curtis
and
Tylor Gladden shared high honors for The Pride with nine tackles each.
Dennis
Stokes added eight for the home club. For Washington & Lee, Bryant
Fulk and Brian Gallagher recorded eight tackles. Gallagher added two of
W&L's six sacks in the contest.
