The Greensboro College football
team (1-9) had a number of exciting moments in the 2005 season. The highlight
for The Pride was a 34-27 win over Shenandoah at mid season. At SU, The
Pride rebounded from a 13-0 deficit and trailed 20-12 at halftime before
rallying for the victory.
While The Pride win total was below
its expectations, GC was competitive in most games. Greensboro lost two
games by one point and two others by a touchdown or less.
The 2005 club set numerous team and
individual records, particularly on offense. Senior quarterback Justin
Roberson shattered Pride passing marks. Headlining his records were
his new single season passing mark (2208) and single game passing record
(334 yards). Roberson threw for 4298 yards (second all-time) in his Pride
career.
Yet it was a freshman, Torrey
Lowe, who grabbed most of the headlines. The versatile Lowe was a starter
at wide receiver, but also played quarterback, running back and returned
kicks for The Pride. He set new records for receptions (70) and receiving
yards (756). Lowe garnered conference rookie of the week honors an unprecedented
six times in '05.
"Torrey Lowe is the kind of role
model we want for Pride Football," said Head Coach Neal Mitchell.
"In addition to being an outstanding athlete, he's a great teammate and
a fine young man."
Following the season, Lowe was picked
USA South offensive rookie of the year and earned first team honors at
wide receiver. Sophomore Defensive lineman Logan Greene was also
picked to the USAS first team. Sophomore linebacker Dallas Daniels
was an honorable mention pick for GC.
Note: Southern Virginia University would later forfeit its win over The Pride. GC officially recorded a 2-8 record for the 2005 season.
