Sept. 10

Davidson 32, Greensboro College 7

Davidson, N.C. -- Davidson christened the expanded Richardson Stadium on Saturday evening by setting a school record with six interceptions, three by sophomore Patrick FitzGerald, as the Wildcats rolled to a 32-7 victory over visiting Greensboro College. The win ended a four-game losing streak for Davidson (1-1), while The Pride (0-1) lost its season opener. The attendance of 4,712 was the biggest crowd in GC football history.

Backup quarterback Pete McSparin led the Pride to its only touchdown on its last possession, tossing a 14-yard scoring pass to Torrey Lowe on a 4th-and-6 play, ruining Davidson's hopes for a shutout. Lowe also returned 4 kickoffs for 92 yards.

Starting GC QB Justin Roberson was 18-39 for 203 yards but threw all 6 INTs. Rod Herbin led Pride rushers with 8 carries for 38 yards. On defense, Logan Greene led GC with 9 tackles. Freshman Michael Witherspoon had one interception for 19 yards.

FitzGerald picked off two passes in the second quarter and another at the start of the second half, his first three career interceptions.

Offensively, Davidson junior Jonathon Hubbard posted his first 100-yard rushing game with 108 yards on 19 carries, plus scored on the opening drive of the game on a one-yard plunge. Unfortunately, he was forced out of the game early in the third quarter after suffering a hand injury while finishing off the run that put him over 100 yards.

After the 8-play, 71-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead, the Wildcats got right back to work with a seven-play, 57-yard touchdown drive, culminating with a one-yard quarterback sneak by sophomore Ryan Alexander. On the extra-point attempt, senior Yeatts Anderson took the snap and ran into the end zone for a 15-0 Davidson lead.

Neither team could dent the scoreboard for the remainder of the half, but the Wildcats put the game out of reach early in the third quarter. After FitzGerald registered his third interception, Davidson drove 74 yards -- all but five coming on the ground -- including runs of 16 and 18 yards by freshman Chad Barnes in place of Hubbard. Barnes capped the drive with a one-yard run for his first career touchdown, and the PAT made it 22-0.

On the first play of Greensboro's next possession, Moore read the play perfectly, intercepting the pass and cruising into the end zone just 17 seconds after Davidson's previous touchdown.

Alexander performed well in his first collegiate start, completing 15-of-26 passes for 169 yards and one interception. His favorite target was junior Brett Dioguardi, whose 78 yards on six catches left him just eight yards shy of 1,000 yards for his career.

As a team, Davidson racked up 419 yards of offense to Greensboro's 272. Only 55 of the Pride's yards came on the ground, while quarterback Justin Roberson completed 18-of-39 passes for 183 yards but threw each of the six interceptions.

Next up for the Wildcats is another home night game, this time against Lenoir-Rhyne next Saturday at 7 p.m. Greensboro stays on the road next week with its first conference game of the year at Maryville at 1:30 p.m.
