Neal Mitchell will enter his seventh season coaching Greensboro College football in 2008.
Under his direction, Pride student athletes have earned 49 USA South All Conference honors, seven regional academic team selections and five all-region picks. Additionally, GC has had one All-American, a CoSIDA national academic team pick and two USAS rookies of the year since Mitchell arrived at GC.
The 2006 club showed significant improvement and posted a 3-7 record in 2006. The Pride was 2-5 in USA South games,
which tied GC for fifth place in the conference. In 2004 season, GC earned its first-ever win over a ranked opponent when they defeated #30 Shenandoaha team that would later win the USA South championship and qualify for the NCAA playoffs.
Mitchell’s 2003 club started the year with its first-ever 2-0 mark and later progressed to a 3-1 record. The ’03 Pride defense was the best the program has developed. Early in the year, Greensboro College was ranked 3rd in the nation in defenseallowing only 125 yards per game.
In his rookie year (2002), Mitchell led The Pride to a record of 4-6 and 4-2 in Dixie Conference gamesGC’s best conference finish ever. Following the season, GC dominated the all-conference team. The Pride placed a conference-high 12 honorees on the DIAC team, including 7 on the first team.
In addition to his coaching duties, Mitchell is also Greensboro College’s supervisor of strength and conditioning.
“We have a strong foundation for our program,” Mitchell said. “Our staff feels very good about where we are going.”
Mitchell arrived from Colorado College where he coached from 1997-’01. He served as assistant head coach his last year for the Tigers, and as the defensive coordinator for the final five seasons at CC. In 2001, Mitchell’s defense recorded two shutouts and held opponents to just 293 yards-per-game.
A 1992 graduate of Washington University, Mitchell was a four-year starter at defensive end and an all conference selection as a senior. Mitchell’s coaching resume also includes stops at Vanderbilt University (1994) as an administrative assistant; Louisiana State University (1995) as a graduate assistant; and Wash U. (1996) as defensive line coach.
While at LSU, Mitchell was on a staff that led the Tigers to a bowl game win over Michigan State. During that same season, LSU recorded its first winning season in six years. At Washington University, he was part of a conference champion team.
Mitchell and his wife, Jennifer, live in Greensboro. They have three children: Jack, Abbey and Tucker.
