Finishes in NCAA Elite Eight
Glen
Collins Named 1st Team All-American
The Greensboro College men's
soccer team had one of its best seasons in 2001. The Pride advanced to
the NCAA quarterfinals and finished with an 18-3-1 record.
GC’s season ended on Nov. 17 at Pride
Field. Visiting Ohio Wesleyan scored a goal in the 31st minute and held
on for a 1-0 win.
The Pride started the 2001 season
with a bang at the Roanoke Tournament. GC bested perennially strong Bethany
and Ramapo by scores of 12-0 and 3-0 respectively. The Pride then hosted
another strong program—Salisbury University—and prevailed, 2-0.
Greensboro headed to Pennsylvania
with a 3-0 record for a two-game road trip. The Pride and defending national
champion Messiah played a hard-fought match. The Falcons won, 3-2, before
2000 fans. The following day, GC faced a strong Elizabethtown team. In
a physical contest, the home team won, 5-2.
GC returned home 3-2 and did not lose
a match until the NCAA quarterfinals. The Pride entered the Elite 8 with
a 16-game unbeaten streak.
In the process, Greensboro won both
the Dixie Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Pride
qualified for the post season for the eighth consecutive time and tenth
overall.
"We came together as a team after
our trip to Pennsylvania," said Pride Head Coach Rusty
Scarborough. "Our team chemistry jelled and we played some great
soccer during our unbeaten streak."
Following GC's 3-1 win over Christopher
Newport in the Dixie Conference Tournament final, The Pride hosted the
South Region finals. In its opening game, Greensboro routed Hardin-Simmons,
6-1. The Pride's 6 goal total was the most by any team in the 2001 NCAA
Division III soccer regionals.
Duncan Edwards
scored 4 goals and had 1 assist in the match. His point total of 9 set
a new Pride single-game—and NCAA playoff— scoring mark.
In the South Region championship game,
GC faced regional rival Roanoke. In a scrappy match at Pride Field, GC
prevailed, 1-0. The game's only score was a header by Edwards off a pass
from Jason Papaj.
Edwards, a junior forward, recently
became the all-time Pride goal scorer (57) and points leader (129). The
New Zealand native tallied 14 goals and passed for 3 assists in GC's last
8 games.
The backbone of The Pride, however,
was the Greensboro defense. Led by first team All-American Glen
Collins, the GC back line helped record 9 shutouts. The Pride
allowed just 22 goals in its 22 games.
