Pride Men’s Soccer Makes
10th Straight NCAA Trip

The Greensboro College men’s soccer finished 2003 with a 14-4-3 record. The Pride won the USA South Conference tournament and was ranked in the top-11 of the NSCAA national poll in 10 of 11 weeks. The green and white reached the post season for the 10th straight year.

The Pride got off to its usual strong start in 2003. GC began the season 6-0 and outscored opponents 18-2. In that span, Coach Rusty Scarborough’s squad won the Spevco Pride Classic tournament and bested nationally-ranked Roanoke and Salisbury. Ben Maxwell earned tournament MVP honors.

The Pride rebounded through mid-season struggles to regain its form at the USA South Conference Tournament. Earning the third seed, GC faced Shenandoah in the semifinal round. The Pride prevailed 3-0.

In the championship game, The Pride faced host Christopher Newport for the third straight season. Maxwell scored both goals as Greensboro College defeated the Captains, 2-1, in front of 750 fans in Newport News, VA.

Making its 12th NCAA Division III playoff appearance, GC hosted Piedmont College in the first round of the tournament. The visiting Lions capitalized on its opportunities and prevailed, 3-1. GC missed the strong play and leadership of senior Michael Smith who was not able to start on defense due to injury. Smith was a four-time conference first team pick.

“Of course we would’ve liked to advance in the NCAAs, but 14 wins is a pretty good season,” Scarborough said. “We started as many as five freshmen in games this year, so that should pay off next season.”

Maxwell, a junior, led GC in scoring with 16 goals and 34 points. Freshman Galen Reid (20 points), junior Bucky Stevens (18 points) and junior Aaron Holcomb (17 points) rounded out The Pride’s top four scorers.

Yet the ‘03 team will be remembered for its defense. The Pride surrendered just 17 goals in its 21 games. In addition to Smith, GC received strong play all season in the back from sophomore Tony Falvino, freshman Matt Mulvena and goalkeeper Matt Brown.
