   Ben Maxwell scored both goals as Greensboro College defeated  Christopher Newport University, 2-1, in the USA South Championship game on Saturday night. The match was played at CNU in Newport News, Va. 
   The victory gives The Pride an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. GC men's soccer has advanced to the postseason for the ten straight years. 
   Maxwell's first tally came in the 8th minute and tied the score at 1-1. Matt Mulvena earned the assist on the scoring play. 
   The game was knotted until Maxwell scored again in the 79th minute. Richard Engel was credited with the helper on the game-winner. 
   GC out shot CNU, 12-9. Goalkepper Matt Brown collected 4 saves for The Pride. 
   The Pride men, like the women, will found out who and where they play in the NCAAs on Sunday night.

   Aaron Holcomb scored two goals to lead Greensboro College to a 3-0 win over Shenandoah in a USA South Tournament semifinal match in Newport News, Va. on Friday night. 
   The Pride faces CNU in Newport News, Va. in the USA South Championship match on Saturday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the NCAA tournament. 
   Freshman Sam Hale scored The Pride's first goal nine minutes into the game. Richard Engel earned the assist. Midway through the first half Holcomb got his first goal unassisted, and propelled GC to a 2-0 halftime lead. 
   Holcomb scored again late in the second half on a hard shot that the SU keeper got a hand on, but couldn't save. The Pride outshot the Hornets, 12-4. Matt Brown (3 saves) recorded his sixth--and GC's 10th--shutout of the year.

   Bucky Stevens scored for The Pride. 
10-30-03 Methodist 2, GC 0
   Methodist College defeated Greensboro College, 2-0, in a USA South match in Fayetteville on Wednesday. The Monarchs stopped GC's 9-game unbeaten streak and handed The Pride its first conference loss. 
  Garrison Rudisill scored for MC in the 6th minute on a shot that deflected off a GC defender. Teammate Kevin Gary tallied in the 74th minute. Justin Agema earned the shutout for the Monarchs.

  Michael Smith and Aaron Holcomb scored 2 goals each as Greensboro College defeated Chowan, 6-0, in a USA South match at Pride Field on Sunday. 
   The win was The Pride's third straight and runs its unbeaten string to 9 games. Tony Falvino and Cliff Olu-Taylor also tallied for The Pride. GC outshot the Braves, 17-2, and led 2-0 at halftime.
   Smith was one of four seniors honored at their last regular season home game. Fellow senior Shaun Abernathy made one save and earned the win. Abernathy is 7-0-1 in his four years at GC. Josh Riddle and Jeff Jones are The Pride's other seniors.

   Ben Maxwell scored on a header in the 6th minute for the game's only goal as Greensboro College bested Guilford College, 1-0, at Guilford on Monday. Aaron Holcomb earned the assist on the play which came off a set piece.
   The Pride outshot the Quakers, 13-6. Gc also had the edge in corner kicks, 8-4. Goalkeeper Matt Brown played all 90 minutes and grabbed one save.

10-18-03 GC 0, CNU 0 (2 OT) 
   Greensboro College and CNU played to 0-0 double overtime tie at Macpherson Stadium on Saturday night. 
   The match was as even as the final score. The Pride outshot the Captains, 14-13. Both team had and equal amount of scoring chances. Brian Shumate recorded 6 saves for the visitors and Matt Brown gathered 5 stops for GC. 
   With the tie, CNU (9-3-2, 4-0-1) maintains its one-half game lead over GC (10-1-3, 3-0-2) in the USA South men's soccer race. Both teams have two remaining conference matches.

10-16-03 GC 2, Hampden-Sydney 1
   Greensboro College (10-1-2) held off visiting Hampden-Sydney (5-7-1), 2-1, at Pride Field on Thursday. 
  The Pride scored in the 15th minute when sophomore Richard Engel blasted a 25-yard shot past HS-C keeper Nathaniel Dallas (1 save). Charlie Rierson earned an assist on the play.
   The score remained 1-0 until the 53rd minute when HS-C's Pat Whitehead scored in close on a pass from Ian Jeremiah. 
  The Pride--which outshot the tigers, 17-4--scored the game winner 7 minutes later. Galen Reid took a long pass from Michael Smith and got behind the HS-C defense. Reid's shot beat keeper Pierce Buckingham (1 save).
   Matt Brown played the entire 90 minutes for GC, had one save and earned the win.
   Note: Forward Cliff Olu-Taylor (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) has joined The Pride's active roster and played in the match.

  Galen Reid (Greensboro, NC/Page HS) scored in the 105th minute as Greensboro College rallied for a 2-1 overtime win at Savannah College of Art & Design on Sunday.
   The Bees tallied in the 26th minute on a goal by Zack Berhman. SCAD led until the 78th minute when GC's Bucky Stevens scored the equalizer on a penalty kick. 
   The Pride outshot the home team 20-9. Matt Brown and Shaun Abernathy combined for four saves in goal for GC. 
   Greensboro's win was its second straight and ran its unbeaten string to 5 games.

  Freshman Sam Hale had a goal and passed for one assist as GC beat Ferrum, 3-0, at  Pride Field on Wednesday. Fellow frosh Galen Reid and Ben Maxwell also scored for The Pride. Ascary Arias had an assist on Reid's goal. Matt Brown (1 save) and Shaun Abernathy shared the shutout.

10-04-03 GC 0, Villa Julie 0 (2 OT)
   Visiting Villa Julie College earned a 0-0 tie with Greensboro College at Pride Field on Saturday. The Pride (7-1-2) out shot the Mustangs, 25-11, but could beat VJC keeper Matt Barrett (8 saves).
   Villa Julie (0-8-1) recorded the match's first five shots but GC had the better of shots, 25-6, from then on. The Pride had more corner kicks, 7-5, and put substantial offensive pressure on the Mustang defense--especially at the end of regulation. Forward Ascary Arias had 2 headers in close, but Barrett save both shots.
   Pride goalkeeper Matt Brown played the entire 110 minutes and grabbed three saves.

Maxwell scores Hat Trick in 4-0 Win Over Hornets
   Ben Maxwell scored three goals--all in the second half--as Greensboro College defeated Shenandoah, 4-0, at Pride Field on Sunday.
   GC led at the break, 1-0, after Galen Reid scored in the 19th minute on an assist from fellow freshman Matt Mulvena. Maxwell's first goal was unassisted, while Aaron Holcomb and Sammy Nelson earned helpers on his second and third tallies.
   Matt Brown started in goal for GC, earned the victory, and had one save. Shaun Abernathy played the final 23 minutes and recorded one save. GC out-shot the Hornets, 22-8. SU's Alex Lane had 6 saves and left the game with an injury. Teammate Kyle Hodges collected 2 saves in the last 23 minutes of play.

09-22-03 Galen Reid Earns USA South Honor 
9-18-03 GC 2, Averett 0
   Freshman Galen Reid (Greensboro, NC/Page HS) scored both goals as Greensboro College (6-0, 1-0 USA South) blanked Averett, 2-0, in Danville, VA. Aaron Holcomb and Samuel Hale assisted on the first tally in the 12th minute. Michael "Kiwi" Smith was credited with the helper in the 57th minute. The win was the fourth straight shut out for The Pride. GC's 6-0 start is the second best in program history. (The 1998 national runner-up team started 8-0.). Jeff Jones and Shaun Abernathy played in goal for The Pride. Neither was forced to make a save. GC out shot AU 37-2.

9-13-03 GC 2, Roanoke 0 
   The South's top 2 teams met at Macperson Stadium on Saturday, but it didn't take long for Greensboro College to take the upper hand against Roanoke. 
   Just 3:46 into the match Ben Maxwell scored to put GC ahead 1-0. On the scoring play, freshman defender Samuel Hale played a long ball and Maxwell beat Maroon goalkeeper Harper Thorsen to the ball. Maxwell chipped the ball over Thorsen and into the goal. In the 20th minute The Pride scored the game's final tally. Pride goalie Matt Brown booted a long ball that the freshman Galen Reid captured. Reid then got behind Thorsen and put the ball past the goal line. Roanoke outshot the home team, 11-9. Brown recorded 4 saves and Thorsen stopped 2 GC shots.

9-7-03 GC 3, Salisbury 0  Spevco Pride Classic Men's Soccer Tournament
   Paced by 3 early goals Greensboro College (4-0) beat Salisbury, 3-0, in the championship game of the Spevco Pride Classic at Macpherson Stadium on Sunday. 
   The Pride, ranked 7th in the nation, expected a fierce battle against the 16th- rated Sea Gulls. Yet hometown freshman Galen Reid (Page HS) headed in a throw-in by tournament MVP Ben Maxwell in the 11th minute for GC's first score.
   Maxwell then assisted Aaron Holcomb in the 19th minute on a nice passing play by GC. The match's final score came one minute later. Bucky Stevens finished Reid's cross for the tally.
   Both teams managed 10 shots each. SU's best scoring opportunity came in the 85th minute when Pride goalkeeper Matt Brown (6 saves) stopped a Sea Gull header in the 56th minute.

   Ben Maxwell scored all 4 goals as The Pride (3-0) beat Bethany (W.V.), 4-0 at Macpherson Stdadium at Bryan Park. Matt Mulvena had two assists and fellow freshman Galen Reid had GC's other helper.

8-31-03 GC 4, Olivet University 1 Box Score
   Bucky Stevens and Aaron Holcomb each had a goal and an assist to lead the Pride to a 4-1 win over Olivet. GC won both games at the Roanoke Tournament and improved to 2-0.
  Ben Maxwell opened the games' scoring in the 9th minute on an assist by Bucky Stevens. Just 3 minutes later, freshman Galen Reid (Greensboro, NC/Page HS) scored his first collegiate goal unassisted. Reid stole an Olivet pass deep in his offensive zone and easily beat the OC keeper. GC held the 2-0 lead at the break.
   Olivet got their only score early in the second half after Greensboro’s Tony Falvino was called for a foul in the box. Eric Cole converted the OC penalty kick. 
   Playing a man down for the final 43 minutes of the match, The Pride was able to score two more goals, one by Stevens, the other by Holcomb, to give the squad the 4-1 victory. Bucky Stevens tallied (assist by Aaron Holcomb) in the 55th minute to put The Pride ahead 3-1. Holcomb scored the game's final goal in the 71st minute on a pass from freshman Matt Mulvena.
   Matt Brown played the first 60 minutes in the nets. He earned the win, stopped 2 shots and allowed the opponents only score. Shaun Abernathy shut out Olivet for the last 30 minutes and garnered 2 saves. GC out-shot OC, 23-9.
    Greensboro’s Stevens, Falvino, and Holcomb were all named to the All-Tournament team. 
8-31-03 GC 3, Ohio Northern 1 Box Score
   The Pride got goals from Bucky Stevens and Ben Maxwell en route to beating Ohio Northern, 3-1, at the Roanoke Tournament on Saturday.
   Stevens tallied on a penalty kick in the 7th minute for the game's first score. Maxwell scored two minutes later on a pass from Stevens. ONU countered in the 24th minute and The Pride led at the break, 2-1. 
   The only score in the second half was an own-goal for The Pride in the 53rd minute. Jeff Jones played the first 52 minutes, stopped 2 shots and allowed one goal. Matt Brown grabbed one save in the last 38 minutes.
   "We came out strong the first 20 minutes," said GC Head Coach Rusty Scarborough. "We started 4 freshmen today and that was a good start to the season."
