Two Greensboro College men's soccer
players have earned All South Region honors selected by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Michael
Smith (Wellington,
NZ/Tawa College) earned first team recognition and
Ben Maxwell
(Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) was named to the regional second team.
For Smith, a senior defender, this
is his third straight All South selection. He scored twice and assisted
on two other goals and helped his club again reach the NCAA Division III
playoffs. Smith was part of a GC defense that allowed just 17 goals in
21 matches.
Smith was a third team All Region
pick in 2001, and made the second team last year. He's a four-time, first-team
all-league choice. Smith was named to the inaugural NCCSIA
All State earlier this month.
"Michael had an outstanding career
at GC," said Pride Head Coach Rusty Scarborough. "Had he not been
injured at the end of the season, 'Smitty' likely would have been picked
All American."
Maxwell, a junior forward, led the
2003 club with 16 goals and 34 points. He earned third team All Region
recognition last season. Maxwell was first team All USA South pick this
year--his third straight All Conference award. He also earned tournament
MVP honors for The Pride.
"Ben has taken on a bigger role with
the team every year," Scarborough said. "We're expecting another fine year
from him in 2004." Maxwell will enter his senior season fifth on the GC
all time scoring list with 36 goals and 13 assists for 85 points.
GC finished the year with a 14-4-3
record and qualified for its 10th straight NCAA tournament appearance.
The Pride earned its third straight conference championship in 2003 and
has placed student athletes in the NSCAA All South team for 12 straight
years.
