Bolstered by the strong play of two Delaware natives,
the Greensboro College men’s soccer team is ranked 10th in the nation and
has a 10-1-3 record.
Sophomore Matt Brown
(Delaware City, DE/William Penn) and freshman Matt
Mulvena (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) have been critical components
of a Pride defense that has allowed just 9 goals in Greensboro’s first
14 matches.

“Brown stepped up late in his freshman year to win
the starting goalkeeper position,” said Rusty
Scarborough, GC’s head coach. “He made some great saves in crucial
situations last year, and has improved this season.”
Last season, Brown was a big reason GC advanced
in the playoffs. He has 5 shutouts, a 6-1-2 record and a 0.65 goals against
average for The Pride this season. Brown played club ball forth the Kirkwood
Soccer Club.
The Pride is looking to make its 10th straight NCAA
Division III men’s soccer tournament appearance this year. GC competes
in the USA South Athletic Conference.

Brown’s father, Joe, also ives in Greensboro. The
former Delaware resident is the general manager of the Carolina Dynamo
of the United Soccer Leagues.
Mulvena--who played for the KSC Blizzard Soccer
Club--has garnered a starting spot at the left back position, just in front
of Brown. In addition to his fine defensive play, Mulvena often takes corner
kicks and free kicks for The Pride. His strong left leg has helped record
a team-high 4 assists for GC.

“We’ve started as many as
five freshmen in games this year. Matt Mulvena has been the most impressive,
in terms of adapting to collegiate soccer.”

“There’s no doubt that the ‘two Matts from Delaware’
have become huge assets to our program,” said Scarborough. “Delaware has
a lot of talented soccer players and we hope they continue coming to Greensboro
College for the NCAA Division III student athlete experience.”
