Lions Tame The Pride, 3-1, in First Round NCAA Game

GREENSBORO, NC -- Stephen Andrew (Falkirk, Scotland/St. Mungo’s) scored two goals and passed for one assist as visiting Piedmont College (18-4) beat Greensboro College (14-4-3), 3-1, in a first round NCAA Division III soccer match Wednesday afternoon.

Piedmont, making its first NCAA appearance in any sport, scored in the 26th minute. Chris Heithaus (Duluth, GA/St. Pius X) struck a long shot. It got by Pride goalkeeper Matt Brown (Delaware City, DE/William Penn), who was coming off his line on the play. Andrew assisted on the goal. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The Lions made it 2-0 when Andrew tallied in the 57th minute. The score was unassisted and occurred on a breakaway.

The Pride, however, countered two minutes later when Bucky Stevens (Richmond, VA/Godwin) converted a penalty kick to make the score 2-1. GC was awarded the PK after Piedmont committed a foul in the box.

GC, and its fans, seemed energized, but Andrew scored again less than two minutes later. It was the game’s final score and Andrew’s 32nd of the season.

“I always tell our team that goals usually come in bunches,” said Piedmont Head Coach Jason Smith. “We kept our focus and were able to get that next goal. Greensboro is a talented side-- and probably better man-for-man than us--but I think we out-worked them today.”

Lion Robert Weisel (Orefield, PA/Parkland) recorded four saves;counterpart Brown collected three for the home team.

Piedmont advances to play host Emory at a four-team regional on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Atlanta.

The Pride, which advanced to its 10th straight NCAA tournament, had allowed only 14 goals entering the match. The three goals allowed equaled a season-high.

“I thought we’d come out with more fire, being at home in the NCAA tournament,” said GC Head Coach Rusty Scarborough. “We’re a young team and we made some mistakes that really cost us. But Piedmont was the better team today.”
