The Greensboro College men’s soccer
team finished the year 11-5-3 and was second in the USA South Athletic
Conference with a 4-1-1 record. 2004 was The Pride's 13th straight season
with double digit
wins.
GC was ranked regionally for most
of the season, and earned national recognition for three weeks during the
year.
"We came up short of reaching the
NCAA playoffs, but this team improved and competed as much as any team
I've coached," said GC Head Coach Rusty Scarborough. "This year's
team was the youngest we have had at Greensboro College in many years and
that will help us next year."
Greensboro's starting 11 often included
as many eight underclassmen. That youth was apparent early in the season
as The Pride struggled to a 0-2-1 start.
GC rebounded, however, with three
straight wins—including a 2-1 overtime win at then #3 Emory University.
The Pride recorded eight shutouts
during the season and allowed more than two goals in a game only once.
Goalkeeper Matt Brown had a .776 save percentage and led a defense
that allowed just 0.84 goals per game.
On offense, GC boasted balanced scoring
that saw five players score 10 or more points. Senior Aaron Holcomb
tallied 17 points and Galen Reid was close behind with 16.
Following the season, The Pride earned
eight All-USA South honors, including four first team picks: Tony Falvino,
Samuel Hale, Holcomb and Reid. Earning second team recognition was
sophomore
defender Matt Mulvena.
More recently, Falvino was picked
to the All-South first team and Reid and Hale were named to the region's
second and third teams, respectively.
