The Greensboro College men's soccer team won the 2005 USA South championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Under first year Head Coach Bill
Brady The Pride finished 11-7-2, the program’s 18th straight year with
10 or more wins. The 2005 GC men's soccer season was the 21st straight
non-losing season for the program.
Defense was the calling card for
the 2005 Pride team. GC allowed just 0.69 goals per game and recorded seven
shutouts during the season. At one point, The Pride posted a seven match
unbeaten string.
With a 5-1 record Greensboro earned
the second seed in the USA South Conference Tournament. GC edged Christopher
Newport, 1-0, in the semifinal round. In the conference championship match,
The Pride defeated host and number one seed North Carolina Wesleyan, 2-1.
Tournament MVP Eric Hatchett tallied the game-winner for The Pride.
GC then upset Emory, 1-0, in the
second round of the NCAA Tournament. On the following day The Pride dominated
Maryville for most of the match. The host Scots, however, scored a late
goal off a deflection and won, 1-0.
Senior defender Tony Falvino
was named USA South player of the year, one of 8 all-conference honors
earned by The Pride. Senior goalkeeper Matt Brown, Falvino, and
Hatchett garnered first team all-conference honors.
"I'm really pleased with our season,"
Brady said. "I came to Greensboro College to be part of a winning
tradition. We got back to the NCAAs this season and we expect to build
on this year."
