The Golf Outing:
What a fantastic way to begin our first annual
Men’s Soccer Alumni/Friends Golf Outing. We had 40 participants show
up and hit the links with over 10 more arriving late for dinner.
The support of alumni, parents and friends was superb and I hope this fosters
greater participation in the years to come. The field was a bit lopsided
with our first place team running away with the event and then running
away without their prizes!! So, Brad Cirba if you are out there please
come by for your prizes or the coaching staff gets to keep all the cool
stuff!
The Awards Go To:
1st Place: Brad Cirba, Kevin McCallister,
Drew Wyatt, and Chris Mendorf
2nd Place: Aaron Holcomb, Bryan Holcomb,
Ben Maxwell, and Ben Houser
3rd Place: The Ryan Symonds Foursome
Longest Drive: Chris Mundorf
Closest to the Pin: Drew Wyatt
Oh, I almost forgot our very gracious last place
team: Scott Eisenbraun, Jason O’Keefe, Mark Lafley and
Lee Powell. Well-done gentleman!
Following the Golf events we gathered for dinner
and a silent auction in which we were able to raise additional funds for
the program. The event was not only a fantastic fundraiser it was
a tremendous day for all related to the GC soccer family.
Special thanks to all our sponsors for helping
making the event a success:
Soccer Unlimited, Under Armour, Carolina Dynamo,
Cassiday & Associates, Old Dominion Freight line, Affordable Chiropractic
Center, Eckerd, Nike, Grasshoppers, Ashford Suites, Mike Grimsley, Wine
Warehouse, Keegan’s.
The Alumni Win by One:
On Sunday afternoon we met up again with a group
of alumni with determination in their eyes. We had a special visit
from Quad Shackley (a member of the first ever GC team) who promptly
got the game started and moved to a more suitable position next to Coach
Brady. Well-done Shack!!
Both the current squad and the alumni had limited
rosters and the conditions were not made to push fitness levels 90 minutes.
As such, Coach Armas decided to shorten the match to 70 minutes.
Both sides showed some moments of brilliance.
Scott
Hemming patrolled the center of the park like it were his own backyard.
Reggie Koranteng tore up the right flank, at times as if there were
no defenders to be found. Who could forget the long range blast from
Aaron Holcomb that had the vision to find the smallest of gaps and
end up in the back of the net?
The game went back and forth and was knotted at
2-2 until the final ten minutes. It was Koranteng, who ventured forward
on yet another run and gained the end line. As he committed a defender
or four, the newest Alumnus--Rich Engel--delayed his run perfectly
and slotted a well-cut back ball into the back of the net for the winner.
Final score Alumni 3 GC Soccer 2
Our boys got a well-deserved lesson and look forward
to the bar being raised for our match in the fall.
Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful weekend.
On behalf of everyone associated with the GC Men’s Soccer Program we anxiously
await our next gathering and remain extremely excited about our future.
All the best,
Coach Brady
