Lucas
Conkle Wins GC Men’s Tennis MVP
The Greensboro College men’s tennis
team struggled to find wins, but played a competitive season. GC posted
Dixie Conference 7-0 wins against North Carolina Wesleyan and Chowan. Its
2-11 mark, however, says little of what The Pride men’s tennis team accomplished.
With just two experienced players,
GC battled some of the region’s best teams. The Pride lacked tennis experience,
but the team’s athletic ability was a great equalizer. The year started
with uncertainty, but the squad grew together during its spring break matches
at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Pride tennis will miss senior captain
Lucas
Conkle and Thomas Sykes—both recent
graduating seniors who will be attending graduate school next fall. Fellow
seniors Kerwyn Matthew and Cory
Taylor will study abroad in Sweden this summer.
Matthew developed physically and mentally
as a tennis player, and garnered the team most improved player honor presented
at the GC athletics convocation.
The men’s tennis Most Valuable Player
was also GC’s most inspirational player. “Lucas Conkle battled on the court
and did not give up in any match,” said GC Head Coach Pat
Williams. “This athlete was a true team player who often sacrificed
his free time in order to help his teammates with their games. He competed
admirably against top Division III players.”
The Coach’s Award went to a player
who seems to have Pride written across his chest. He frustrated many talented
opponents with his hustle and will-to-win. “Chris
Cline had some great wins, in both singles and doubles,” said Williams.
“He finished fourth in the Dixie Conference tournament and really improved.”
“This was truly a great group of guys
to work with,” said Williams. “Their athletic talents, competitive nature,
and great attitudes, made this group a joy to coach. I just wish I had
more time to work with those who will be graduating this year.”
Yet With the return of Nickolay
Bochilo, Nate Parr and
Chris Cline next season, GC men’s tennis is poised to improve on this year’s
record.
