The Pride lost three of its top six players from the regionally-ranked 1997 team, but still regrouped for the 1998 season. What appeared to be a rebuilding year turned into a winning season as the Pride finished with an 8-7 dual match record and 4th place in the tough Dixie Conference. Greensboro finished its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head with an undefeated record, knocking off Marywood University and Stevens Institute of Technology for a 2-0 start to the season. Later, the Pride recorded an impressive win over NCAA Division I opponent North Carolina A&T. Two losses came against Division II opponents, and three losses were to regionally ranked Division III opponents. Four rainouts against less formidable opponents kept GC from reaching double digits in wins. The backbone of the Pride squad was senior captain Darren Alfano, who competed at #3 singles and #2 doubles. Despite knee surgery last season, Alfano was 7-7. Three of his losses came in 3-set matches that included a total of four tie-breakers. Alfano teamed with freshman Tommy Waters at #2 doubles for an 8-6 record. Sophomore David Basten was 8-7 at #2 singles. Basten and #1 singles player Jay James went 9-6 at #1 doubles. Freshman Andy Manders recorded an 8-7 record at #5 singles, and teamed with freshman James Fitzgerald for a 7-7 record at #3 doubles. At the DIAC Tournament in Raleigh, N.C., five Greensboro players recorded first round victories in their respective flights. Most of the semifinal matches were against national power Averett College, which won the tournament handily and eliminated GC’s players from contention. |
