Berg and Newman Led Pride Men's
Hoops to Third
Place USA South Athtletic Conference
Finish
The Greensboro College men's basketball team closed
the 2005-06 season with a 7-5 record and placed third in the USA South
Athletic Conference. Overall, The Pride was 12-13, which matched the best
season since the 1994-95 campaign.
Not coincidentally, the green and white improved
after Steve Berg joined the squad. With Berg in
the lineup GC went 10-6 the remainder of the season. The senior transfer
averaged 18.6 points per game, made 72 three-point baskets and set a GC
record with eight three-pointers vs. CNU on Feb. 17. Berg led his team
in scoring, rebounding (5.8 RPG) and was second on the team in assists
(2.9 APG). Following the regular season, Berg was picked the USA South
men’s basketball player of the year. He was also picked to the
NABC All Region first team.
James Newman was an
all-conference performer, too. The junior guard averaged 15 points per
game and garnered honorable mention recognition. GC battled injuries throughout
the season and lost Newman for four of the last five games late in the
year.
In the same game, The Pride lost post player Bryant
Camp for the balance of the year. Seniors Brian
Holloway and Justin Battle helped carry the
load in the front court.
"We did some very good things this year," said
Pride Head Coach Bryan
Galuski. "When you consider we only had one starter back from last
year's team, a new staff and a lot of new student-athletes, I'm proud of
this group."
In addition to Newman and Berg, freshman Michael
McDuffie rounded out the GC back court. McDuffie averaged 11 points
each outing, and dished a team-high 3.7 assists per game.
