| The Greensboro College men’s lacrosse
team closed the year with an 8-6 record, its best mark in five seasons.
GC entered the year with many new players and a
young roster. It did not, however, take long for The Pride to impress:
GC beat Division II Wingate, 10-4, in its season opener.
Greensboro College again faced a difficult schedule
that included two NCAA Division III playoff teams, four ranked opponents,
and three NCAA Division II teams (all wins).
Season highlights included one goal victories versus
Randolph Macon College and at Goucher College. "Those were two very big
wins for us," said fifth-year Head Coach Dan
Cetrone. "We let a lead get away from us against Randolph Macon,
but still came back with the score in overtime. At Goucher, we fought all
game long and then Brandon Harker got
the game-winner late in the fourth quarter."
Ultimately The Pride closed the year with a dominating
17-6 win over Guilford, with 14 different players scoring points for GC.
Another challenging schedule resulted in tough competition,
but also team and individual improvement. Individually, the points leader
for The Pride was Nick Harness. The sophomore
is already fourth on the all-time list with 91 points.
Goalkeeper Corey Reina
was the backbone of a vastly improved Greensboro College defense. GC allowed
9.8 goals-per-game, which was 6.3 fewer than the 2002 team. The freshman
goalkeeper posted a .595 save percentage and was the winning goalie in
seven of GC's eight victories. Reina was name the team's most valuable
player.
“It takes more than just bringing in talented players
to have a winning season,” said Coach Dan Cetrone. “This team knew we had
to focus on all aspects of being a better squad in order to succeed. We
took a big step this year, and I expect next season to be even better.”
