The Greensboro College men’s lacrosse team finished
7-7 in 2004. But numbers tell only a part of their story.
The Pride faced a schedule that included six top
20 teams. Amazingly, GC lost 5 games by just one goal. Two of those defeats
came in overtime.
“It’s bittersweet…we should’ve won more games” said
Pride Head Coach Dan Cetrone. “We raised
eyebrows as a regional contender and were under consideration for an NCAA
bid this season. We played toe-to-toe with some of the country’s best programs.”
Season highlights included convincing wins over
Virginia Wesleyan, Guilford, Wittenberg and Marymount. GC also beat two
NCAA Division II teams: Catawba and Pfeiffer. Yet the most exciting victory
was GC’s 15-14 overtime win at Randolph Macon. The Pride scored the game’s
last 7 goals for the win.
GC men’s lacrosse received strong play from five
seniors. Leading the way, was attackman Nick
Harness, who retires as the third all-time scorer in Pride history.
Winning Pride most valuable player honors for the
second straight year was sophomore Corey Reina.
“Corey was ranked among the best goalkeepers in the country,” said Coach
Cetrone. “His teammates knew they needed Corey on the field every day and
he is the backbone of our defense.”
“Those seniors helped bring us to a new level,”
said Cetrone. “When we reach the next stage of success they, too, will
share a part of it.”
