Strong
3-22-02
While the 2001-02 Greensboro College swimming team
came two wins short of matching last year’s school-record six wins, The
Pride ended the season in impressive fashion.
GC closed the year 4-7. In its last two dual meets,
Greensboro bested Pfeiffer, 59-43, and lost to Sweet Briar, 48-47. Against
the Vixens, GC led the entire meet until SBC won the final relay event
to prevail.
In its other dual meets The Pride beat Salem, Limestone
and Pfeiffer earlier in the season. The Pride also had a number of close
meets where the green and white came up short. Greensboro lost to Hollins
by seven points and fell by 11 to Hood.
The season highlight, however, came in the year-ending
Atlantic States swimming championships at Radford, VA. As a team, The Pride
finished 10th of 13 teams.
Yet sophomore Tara Norcross
and junior Jessica Heckert set Greensboro
College records at the final meet. Norcross set a new 500 meter freestyle
mark with a 5:59.80 clocking. Heckert swam a 13:17.35 1,000 meter split
to break the previous GC time. Other individual highlights were Norcross
and senior Tracey Comune each finishing
in the top eight in three individual events at Radford.
Pride Head Coach Kevin
Thornton will enter his third season next year with high hopes.
GC expects 9 letterwinners to return.
“The season of 2001-2002 culminated with everyone
peaking for our last dual meet, which carried us to wonderful performances
at the Atlantic States Championship meet,” said Thornton. “The ladies really
came together as a team in the end—and it showed in their efforts. A base
of strong leadership developed, which should have a tremendous impact on
next year’s results.”
