Sophomore Catherine Bethea set three Greensboro
college records and led The Pride to a ninth place finish at the Atlantic
States Championships that concluded at Washington & Lee University
at the end of February.
Bethea set GC benchmarks in the 200 Free (2:09.24),
500 Free (5:51.09) and the 1650 Free (20:38.11). The 2005 season was a
unique one for the GC swimmers. In addition to the regional meet, Greensboro
College competed in four dual meets, all in the Spring season. The Pride
finished 1-3 in dual competition.
GC lost to Hollins in its season opener. The Pride
then suffered close defeats to Randolph Macon Woman's College and Guilford
before besting Salem College, 85-50, on February 4th.
Sophomore Sharon Boyd won 11 individual
events in dual meet competition. Also contributing to the teams success
were Jessica "Meryl" Martin, Christina Smith and Cherilyn Strader.
Another highlight for the program was the opening
of the Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center as a competition site
for intercollegiate athletics. The newer venue will be an asset for the
future years of the program.
With an underclass-dominated squad, Greensboro
College swimming is poised for regional success at the RRFSLC pool.
