Cooke Headed Strong GC Freshman Class

Under the direction of first year Head Coach Brad Herndon, the 2005-06 Greensboro College women's swimming team made a splash in 2005-06.

Freshman Alex Cooke won three individual events and led Greensboro College to a seventh place finish at the 2006 Atlantic States Championships. Cooke, a native of High Point, N.C., was named the Atlantic States swimmer of the year.

The team finish was the highest for The Pride since the 1998-99 GC team placed fifth at the championships. Cooke won the 50 free with a time of 24.99. She set a school record with the finish. She also won the 100 free with a 55:15 clocking. In addition to breaking a GC record, Cooke also became the first Greensboro College swimmer to make an NCAA cut (she made the NCAA B-cut in the 100 yard backstroke, 59.71). Cooke set five Pride individual swimming records  during the year.

"I'm really proud of the gals," said Herndon. "We were one point out of 6th place and just three behind fifth. In all, we set 10 records by four different freshmen: Mica Riddle, Megan Lupsha, Jo Portis, and of course, Alex Cooke! This was great finish to the season, and we hope to build upon it next year."

The team of Cooke, Lupsha, Riddle and Portis placed third in the 800 free relay at Atlantic States with a new record of 8:53.38. Lupsha was seventh in the 1650 free with a Pride record of 19.46.84. Lupsha set three GC individual records.
