GC Swimming Posts Best Season
The 2006-07 Greensboro College swimming team finished 7-3 in dual meets, the best record in program history.
Under first-year Head Coach Michelle Higdon, The Pride closed the year with a solid seventh place finish (173 points) at the Atlantic States Championships at Radford University. The seventh place finish matches the third best placing in the program's 12 years of competition.
At the championships, Megan Lupsha finished the 500 free with a time of 5:48.55, breaking her last year's record of 5:48.91. Sophomore Alex Cooke, last year's Atlantic States Swimmer of the Year, again had a great meet. She was seeded first in the 100 back and finished first. Her time of 59.90 qualified her for the NCAA's B-cut for the second straight year.
GC had a number of exciting wins in its dual meets. Against Mary Baldwin, GC trailed by six points entering the last eventthe 200 free relay. Yet the team of Jo Portis, Lupsha, Mica Riddle and Cooke finished in a time of 1:57.11 to give The Pride a 41-40 win. Earlier in the season, GC won a competitive double dual meet with cross town rival Guilford (48-38) and Randolph-Macon Womans College (45-41).
The team of Portis, Sharon Boyd, Lupsha and Cooke established an 800 free relay record. The lone senior on the team, Boyd finished her stellar career for The Pride. She set a new individual benchmark in the 200 breast (2:42) and 500 IM (5:09.6) this year and also leaves with the 200 fly record (2:22.30).
“I’m proud of what the team accomplished," Higdon said. “We had a smaller roster than most of our opponents but we got the most from our squad. With five strong returnees expected back next year, we have the nucleus of what could be an exceptional team.”
