Kevin Thornton coached Pride swimming to a 7-4 record in 2003-04. He is the winningest coach in the history of GC swimming. Seven victories were the most ever by a The Pride team in dual competition. Team members broke five school records in the 2003-04 campaign. Thornton was selected Greensboro College's women's swimming coach in June 2000. Thornton brings extensive coaching experience to GC. He also currently is a year-round head coach with the Greensboro Swim Association. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Thornton
was a volunteer coach at the Kingston, RI school in 1998-99. He also was
the head coach at the University of Florida from 1996-98.
Thornton also has been active in international swimming. Among his previous jobs, he served as an assistant coach for the United States men at the World University Games in 1997. He was also a head coach for Suriname at the 1994 World Championships. One of his swimmers earned a silver medal in the Olympic Games. Thornton holds a level five certificate from the American Swim Coaches Association and served on the U.S.A. national coaching staff for five years. A resident of High Point, Thornton is also certified as a strength and conditioning specialist. "Kevin has great contacts within the swimming community, both locally and nationally," said GC Athletics Director Kim Strable. "We think he can build the women's swimming program into a regional competitor."
