| An influx of talented newcomers meshed
with veterans to produce the best season ever for The Greensboro College
softball program. In its breakthrough year, The Pride went 21-13--its best
statistical finish in program history. Additionally, the green and white
won 5 conference games, the most since the program was revived four years
ago.
GC also rewrote the record book this year. The Pride
broke or tied 27 school records. Most notably, the team had Pride bests
for: lowest earned run average; highest batting average; and fewest errors.
New team benchmarks in the three main categories--pitching, hitting and
defense—underscored what great improvement the program made this season.
Team highlights included beating defending DIAC
champ, Ferrum, and this year’s regular season champion, Chowan. The Pride
also earned its first-ever program win against North Carolina Wesleyan
College.
Individually, The Pride placed three student athletes
on the All-Dixie Conference team. Jamie Pittman
(.368 batting average/7-8 pitching record), Frances
Constantino (.471 and 16 stolen bases), and Meredith
Sapp (11 stolen bases) earned second team Dixie distinction.
GC will miss its talented seniors, The Pride’s first
graduating class since the program restarted in 2000. Rebecca
Ashley, Leslie Thomas, Sapp and
Tabitha
Backus were singled out by GC Head Coach Ben
Guiliano.
"We owe a lot to this group," said Guiliano. "It
was exciting starting a new program, but we took some lumps early on. I
think they'll agree it's more fun being on the other end and handing out
the punishment--which we did this year."
With most of the roster returning in 2004--including
pitcher Whitney Williams (12-5, 2.24
earned run average)--GC expects even more victories next season. |
