GC 3, Peace 1
RALEIGH, N.C. - Greensboro
College registered the biggest upset of the USA South Conference softball
tournament to date by eliminating Peace College Saturday morning in the
loser's bracket quarterfinals.
The win marked the first GC had ever
won two conference tournament games.
Greensboro (14-17-1) and the tournament's
eighth seed, sent fourth seeded Peace (19-16-1) packing with a three run
bottom of the fourth. GC now moves on to play the loser of the Ferrum College.
PC scored the initial run of the
game in the top of the fourth when they manufactured a run out of a single,
a wild pitch and two sacrifices. Lauren Pleasant led off with a single
to left, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a sacrifice and then
trotted home on Vanessa Bryan's sacrifice fly to left.
In the bottom half of the inning,
GC answered with three runs on four hits to both chase Peace starter Heather
Dobbins and build a lead they would not relinquish.
The big play in the inning came when
Kelly
Cooper singled to right, sending Whitney Williams home from
second. Williams would have been out at the plate, but PC catcher Melanie
Legrow allowed the relay to go off her glove for an error that plated Williams
and moved Cooper to second. Cooper scored one batter later on Bailey
Cotton's sacrifice bunt.
Williams was the winner on the mound
with a four inning performance that included a strikeout against two hits,
a run and three walks.
